I'm thinking of replacing a older DVD player that died with a DVD recorder.

The first necessity would be a QAM tuner. Followed by a CC slot (if any have this?) and TVGOS (full, not the 'Daily' version). A HDD isn't really necessary, and no VCR.

Suggestions?

None will have a CC slot or TVGOS, of the cheaper units I'd probably look at the Toshibas with tuners. A Panasonic EZ-28 would also work but it's probably going to be 2x the price of a comparable Toshiba.

Do the Toshibas and The Panny do QAM?

The Panasonic EZ models with digital tuners-that can receive cable QAM are the 28, and vcr combos 47 and 48.

The Toshiba D-R560 and D-VR660 both have ATSC and QAM tuners.

Unfortunately TVGOS DVD recorders are now extinct. The last one I know of is the Panasonic EH-75V. It worked beautifully. But when they were discontinued, prices doubled and even tripled. So you're not the only one who wants a recorder with TVGOS ;-). Even if you managed to find one of those, it only has an analog tuner. A recorder with your specs would truly be the holy grail.

I love my Tosh D-R560!

No it doesnt have TV guide but it has chase playback, simultaneous recording and playback all on a RW- disc!

It works great and the QAM is awesome!

Might as well pile on!

Click #1 in my signature for info on two units with QAM tuner and 160GB HDD, priced about the same as some single-disc recorders available today and lower than many old, analog models.

Thanks for a very informative write up. Which of the two you prefer? Why?

I've had my three 3575's for close to 2 years and my Mag 2160 for just a month or so, but so far, I think the 2160 is a "next-generation" 3576.

I've got the difference listed n this page. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=14564338&postcount=1570)

Regarding the USB connection (without reading up on it), could one xfer recordings to another HDD or was there some other pratical use?

FWIW, I would put the ability to receive clock data from a digital channel at the top of the list.

DVDRs in North America have "dumb" USB ports that only allow playing pics and music.

The Mag 2160 can search digital channels for a time signal, the 3576 uses only analog channels (my 3575's find a time signal on my Fox analog cable channel).

So it isn't much of a loss if it isn't there? I was figuring it could be used for data xfer as in moving recordings to another HDD.

I understand the digital ability for time signals, my point was it is a important feature that should be at the top of the list as a difference between the two models.
