View Full Version : Why?
Leetthal 01-26-09, 11:32 PM I've had my mind set on the 40A650 LCD for some time (actually ordered but canceled for another reason though) but why when i go to bestbuy and etc... the 46PZ85U always gets my attention and i end up looking at it alot :)
120hz looks cool but when i see the plasma it just feels right. Can someone explain lol.
would it be the right choice to get the 46 Plasma over the 40 LCD?
Price are about even( LCD being a tad bit more $)
My budget is $1k-1.2k MAX

chrisherbert 01-27-09, 12:01 AM If you like the way it looks then get it. Those six extra inches are also going to make a big difference.
Leetthal 01-27-09, 12:03 AM But then i saw the Cnet review and the LCD got 8.0 and the Plasma got 7.7
Is the PZ85u really bad with noise and color? i dont like alot of color, i like that more realistic look so i usually turn color down abit.

Don't trust Cnet they suck at reviews. Go with the Plasma you won't regret it. I just bought a Pioneer Kuro plasma three weeks ago and it is 100% better than my old LG LCD.

As long as you use "cinema" mode, noise won't be a problem. The color is inaccurate but not everyone notices that. Really the size is going to make a bigger difference than anything else.

You could give 95% of the general public full adjustment on these panels and they would not touch a thing. Many people can't even find the menu button to save their lives.
Tell most people that you got your TV calibrated and they will say "when did it break"
Leetthal 01-27-09, 12:23 AM Yes i will use it in Cinema mode. like i said i dont like too much color. so by turning down color will the inaccurate colors get a bit better?

Glad to read I'm not the only one stuck in the 70's
creemail 01-27-09, 12:39 AM One big reason is that the AMP or interpolation motion that you see with the A650 is not smooth, but more video-like. It is suitable for some situations, such as scrolling text and animation films. Other than that, many plasma owners or those that are undecided tend to leave that feature off. On the other hand, the motion is much smoother on plasma without a delay during fast action scenes. That is one reason why you like the 46PZ85U.
Another reason is the black levels are very good during darken room conditions. The A650 looks great during the day, but you may see slight clouding and light spill. The screen looks completely black on the A650, but it reflects just as much as a plasma glass.
Overall, the 46PZ85U is cheaper and the picture is just as good. One nod that I give the A650 is the overall ability to change the temp and gamma controls and colors look very vibrant. Other than that, the plasmas provide a nice pic, without the high price tag.

Leetthal 01-27-09, 12:50 AM Thanks Guys especially Creemail! i made my decision. I'm getting the 46" Plasma :)

No problem. Definitely enjoy! :D

I've noticed oversaturated greens with my Panasonic plasma at default settings in cinema mode. I've adjusted the colors by turning down the "color" and "tint" options and get a much better picture. It cuts into the red gamut a little bit but I think the trade off works well.

Although I personally like the new Samsung displays, CNET is a joke. Unless it actually caught fire or exploded when they plugged it in, CNET would proclaim the Samsung the best no matter what. ;)

Lcd people (including my extended family and some friends) seem to prefer the overly bright, cartoony look though...but always comment on how good my plasmas look. Go figure..

High quality LCDs like the Samsung 650 are capable of extremely accurate color -- far more accurate than the 85u, and with unmatched calibration controls.
PrimeTime 01-27-09, 01:53 PM Tell most people that you got your TV calibrated and they will say "when did it break"Good one!
And if you're an ISF guy, your response would be, "They ship them broken from the factory, and I fix them."
Leethal,
Just so I'm clear, you started the thread at 11:32 and had your mind made up and trigger pulled by 12:50?? Who are you and what gives you the right to be so decisive when the rest of us spend hours a day for months weighing the pros and cons and arguing about competing technologies, manufacturers, models, etc. You sir, are not AVS Forum material! //kidding
Just to weigh in, good decision on the plasma. Not only are you getting (IMO) the better technology from a PQ standpoint, but 6" more on top of a 40" is significant.
When I started the search to upgrade from my 42" plasma, I was dead set on getting a 52" LCD. I was convinced that I wanted the extra 2" over 50" plasmas, lighter weight, arguably better power consumption, etc. When push came to shove, my eyes (and my wife's eyes) were always drawn to the more realistic plasmas when we went looking. I ended up getting the smaller (50" vs 52"), more expensive (Pio Kuro) plasma and I could not be happier!
creemail excellent post!+1 this is a good example of no bs but facts (why cant avs be like this anymore i dont know)
oh and if i may add plasma has less visable issues then lcd do, ps i know the op decided on the plasma

Leetthal 01-28-09, 12:03 AM Well it wasn't hard!
I pretty much knew i was going to get the Panasonic, like i said the extra 6" and price was enough. The 85U always looked good to me when i would go to bestbuy but also did the 6 and 7 Series Samsung LCD.
120hz looked cool for maybe the first few minutes then my head started to hurt. Now i understand what people mean when they say they want it to feel like a movie and not a soap-opera.
My brother(also shopping) on the other-hand is dead set on a Samsung A650 or A750 LCD. He's most likely going to get the A750 so i will definitely get the two together and make a post, a little LCD vs Plasma ;) And i promise alot of pics :)
creemail 01-28-09, 12:05 AM Glad we we're able to help you!!!

Thanks Leetthal! I greatly appreciate your kind words. :)
Hmm...if you create a Plasma vs. LCD thread it will most likely be merged to one of the master threads that has been created.
Chris
Leetthal 01-28-09, 09:49 AM Well it wouldn't be a plasma vs LCD, more of a can't decide between samsung LCD or panasonic plasma thread. I would try my best to show the pros and cons of each to help those who where having trouble decide like me.

If its a 52A650 vs. PZ800 you should be fine... :D

bluewaves 01-29-09, 08:54 PM good choice with the 5020, btw Cnet couldn't review anything every Cnet review I have seen looked like it was written by an LCD loving kid on crack, my personal 2 cents.
Andrmgic 01-29-09, 08:55 PM Seems like everyone is getting one of these :D
I hope to be able to order mine in a couple weeks!

I was in a similar situation about 3 years ago when I first started looking at getting a new big screen. I had a Pioneer Elite 51" RPTV that had a great picture but wasn't HD. My first look was a a Sharp 52" LCD that had a very nice picture and an acceptable SD picture. I then checked out some plasmas and immediately was drawn to the Pioneer at Magnolia. I kept wondering through the various show rooms and saw some nice Samsung and Sony LCD's but my eyes kept drifting back to the Pioneer and that's what I purchased.
Bottom line, trust your eyes and your instincts and then don't turn back. :)

David Katzmaier (who seems to do just about all of the reviews) has admitted to having a personal preference for plasmas.

Yup... have to wonder if Pioneer see how many ppl are jumping on the 5020 deals and go, "Wow, the $2000 price point sure is popular... maybe we should have a product at this price permanently?"
Would be nice.
