Okay, here it is. I am a no nothing when it comes to this stuff. I am looking at buying a home theater system for my living room. The room is fairly small about 20x20. That being said I was looking at the Bose systems (something like the Lifestyle 18 series III. I can get one for about $1200.00. However, I am not hung up on it. Any suggestions as to better setups that are fairly simple? Also, the wife wants small speakers with good sound. that is one of the reasons we were looking at Bose.
I know there are probably many places on this site to research, but I am kind of short on time at the moment and the wife gets impatient. Thank you all in advance for your time and patience.

Bose is for the birds. For that kind of money you could get a pretty nice setup. If the wife is hung up on small satellite sized speakers, and you can't get around that, then go with something like the Polk RM6750 5.1 set. $250. There are certainly other options for 5.1 satellite sets, this is just an example that comes to mind. Then get a quality entry level HDMI amp/receiver, e.g. Onkyo 606 for ~$350-400. You could even add a blu-ray player for $200-250 and be out the door under $1000 and have a 10 million times better audio/video experience than that overpriced Bose POS.
