Yeah, this program would benefit going to HD like few others, last season's Holi festival being a great example.

Certainly more than 'Survivor'.

Well not sure it is a sign but the cast interviews for season 14 are in 16:9. I went and looked at last seasons and they were 4:3 so maybe a sliver of hope...

Wow, I guess we know where CBS' is headed with this one. A pair of NFL cheerleaders and a pair of Southwest flight attendants. We can only hope for a hot "contest" between these teams. ;)

Executive Producer Betram Van Munster has said not to expect The Amazing Race to switch to high definition anytime soon: "I don't think it's a priority. We're just happy to continue making the show as it is."

That sucks. Amazing Race is at the top of my list of programs I would like to see in HD.

Reality shows in general seem to be the last to convert to high def, but I guess you need the ratings of "Survivor" to pay for the upgrade in equipment. Survivor used to make all kinds of stupid excuses why they weren't in HD yet - the cameras were too bulky, they couldn't shoot in low light, etc. - but we all know the real reason is money. I used to watch the Voom channel "Rush" and they would attach small HD cameras to the helmets of snowboarders and BMX racers and deliver amazing pictures, so the big camera argument was bogus.

Host Phil Keoghan says that CBS president & CEO Les Moonves takes an active part in the casting and production of the show - too bad Moonves seems to agree that making Amazing Race in HD is not a priority.

Well, I saw "presented in HD" at the beginning but it was in SD and actually looked pretty bad, even compared to last season when it was in SD as well.

All of the commercials were in SD so either way someone screwed something up.

wow.. too bad, seems like a perfect show for HD - poor CBS

1.) Hate it said presented in HD.

2.) Hate hate HATE the father/son team of Mel and Mike White. Recognize Mike White? You should, he not only wrote School of Rock, but he plays Jack Black's best friend and roommate "Ned" in it. He has a long enough IMDB profile to NOT be on Amazing Race. He's obviously a "plant" recruited by the show. I want him gone ASAP.

3.) Yet another leg that ends in Switzerland with first place getting a trip to Mexico. It still continues to make TONS of sense (sarcasm).

4.) Strange to see a leg with no Detour. Very un-TAR like.

5.) Didn't care for a goddamned bunching point in the first leg! Save that crap for later, please!

6.) Only three continents (TOTAL, INCLUDES North America) covered this season. Seems a bit odd. Lowest # of continents EVER, not including TAR: Family Edition. I won't say which three, but that seems kinda lame (but filming was done in Nov. 2008) so they obviously want to make it seem like winter for this winter season (mostly).

I read an interview with Bertram van Munster, the show's producer, a few months ago in which he explained that the impediment to going HD was that many of the countries they shoot in require that they use local crews. Unlike here in the US where most freelance crews have upgraded to HD cameras, most overseas crews have not.

Unlike here in the US where most freelance crews have upgraded to HD cameras, most overseas crews have not. That would contradict a story I read that said the camera crews stayed with the teams at all times, which meant the airlines had to have space on the planes for them from country to country. It would also raise the question of how do you transfer seamlessly during the race from one camera team to the next? Sometimes teams fly into different airports at the last minute, for example. How could you have local camera crews available for every possible contingency? It might be true that in some countries unions require that local cameramen be hired, even if they are not used. That would simply be an added expense for the producers. I am reasonably sure that the same equipment travels with the teams the entire race.

Another Amazing Race fan here that's shocked that this show still isn't in HD. I just recently became able to get CBS in HD at all and I was blown away to discover that AR is still just SD. :(

I can't think of many other shows that deserve to be in HD more than AR. There's so much splendor and beauty in the world, and AR is one of the few major network shows where they could really showcase that. I mean, the scenery and the people they visit play major roles in the show. I can think of countless episodes where I would have loved to have witnessed it in HD. Including last week's one in Bavaria. Stunning location, hobbled by crap-def filming.

Interesting tidbit about the local film crews. I thought I had read somewhere that said the same chase crew follows each team around throughout the race, and that local crews did the supporting & background shots at each location. I'd think they'd at least be able to outfit the chase crews with HD cameras. Granted, having a mix of SD and HD content in the same show might not be ideal, but I think it'd be better than SD-only.

Maybe by Season 15 they'll get it figured out!
