Guys, is there still a market for a G90 that only has about 400 hrs on its original tubes. It is a one owner unit that is in a dedicated theater on a 92in screen.

Richardc 01-28-09, 03:21 AM No theres no market at all, give me your address. Leave it on the grass outside your house, and I'll pick it up tomorrow. bruce can 01-28-09, 10:11 AM Guys, is there still a market for a G90 that only has about 400 hrs on its original tubes. PM me your highest PM offer and we'll see if there is still a market .. ;) Bruce Curt Palme 01-28-09, 10:14 AM What kills me is WHY would people take a set like this out with only 400 hours on it? If the owner paid $35K retail, that works out to $87.50 per hour of viewing, not including the screen, setup and other peripherals. Did the owner buy into a 'this is old, replace it with a new digital' salespitch line? Sad really. There is a market for the set, but now that Sony has discontinued literally all parts for the G90, the worth is far less than it was a year ago. howdydoody 01-28-09, 08:13 PM Curt, I just sold my G90 today with a little over 1200 hours in near perfect condition. I didn't pay retail as it was B stock with 49 hours when I purchased it, but I did pay more than 20K initially. It was a great deal for the buyer. I am sad. It is a great projector. In many ways it is much better than my replacement. But I don't watch just movies. For a bat cave experience I would never have sold. With my new digital I get more lumens for sporting events which I typically watch with higher ambient light. I also now can feel comfortable with my 7 year old using for video games without fear that I will get burn in. In my case, no salesman pitched me to change. A digital (RS20) just fits my needs better right now. At the same time, I will definitely miss my old PJ. Curt Palme 01-28-09, 08:58 PM Well I do see some of your points re the ambient light and lumens, but the burn in thing is way overrated. WIth today's video games with the constrantly changing screens (and the ADD factor of a typical 7 year old switching games all the time (no offense!), it's simply not an issue. You run the risk of burning out a bulb in the RS 20 same as tube burn if the 7 year old forgets to turn the set off after use (a bit of an issue in my house, I won't stop screaming until SOME PEOPLE learn to use the 'off' button) :), so strike that one as getting rid of the G90. To each their own though, if you can afford a big hit on something you paid $20K for a few years ago, by all means. I know I can't. I'm sitting at over 200K miles on my 2002 vehicle, and the damn thing still better last me another 2 years..:) BTW, a quick scan of the net claims the JVC is 900 lumens, the G90 is 1200 or 1300. Haven't you gone down a notch in brightness? Tim in Phoenix 01-28-09, 09:14 PM If the owner paid $35K retail, that works out to $87.50 per hour of viewing......... Hehe You've spent more than that in strip clubs...... :-) . raster 01-28-09, 09:18 PM My thoughts exactly- I fully agree with Curtie What kills me is WHY would people take a set like this out with only 400 hours on it? Curt, do you honestly feel that Sony tech support really has anything to do with the price of a 10 year old projector. I mean, it's not like they have been giving support for the last five years. I know there was some old tech in some state that we could track down if persistent... you mean that guy is gone now? This projector has not been supported for some time already, support for these comes from the forums. craigr Curt Palme 01-29-09, 08:54 PM I absolutely stick by what I said. :) A year ago I could have sold a mint G90 for about $10K. WHile everything has dropped, go follow the G90/Sony thread on my forum regarding the DAC chip that fails commonly on these sets now. Sony can't even do repairs, since they internally have no more chips. I agree, tech support and parts come from these forums and such, but when one chip was only ever supplied by Sony, and hasn't been available in about 8 months now, that $38K projector is now toast. I know of 6 boards out there that have had this chip die, I'm sure there will be others. Barcos, NECs, other Sony models, heck, even Ampros are better supported at this time over a G90. raster 01-29-09, 11:52 PM Man wouldn't that problem piss ya off after spending all that money? wow! And never doubt The Curt Man!!:D howdydoody 02-03-09, 02:29 PM BTW, a quick scan of the net claims the JVC is 900 lumens, the G90 is 1200 or 1300. Haven't you gone down a notch in brightness? Actually, the G90 is rated at 350 lumens. It is definitely considerably less bright than the RS20 even though I have my RS20 placed at long throw (min zoom). This placement gives best on/off contrast and lower brightness. howdydoody 02-03-09, 02:44 PM Lumens ANSI 350 lumens (150kHz:50Hz, 6500°K) ASNI 280 lumens (15kHz:60Hz, 6500°K) Peak White 1300 lumens, All White 500 lumens goobenet 02-06-09, 10:45 PM Sorry to threadjack here, but interesting side note. When i was fresh in the radio industry, the college station i worked at had just gotten some "NEW TOP OF THE LINE" Arrakis 12000 series consoles... not more than 2 months after being installed, the line driver chip on each fader started to fail, one after another... called up arrakis, "oh, um, yeah, uh... the manufacturer just discontinued that chip and there's no comprable replacement." I ordered every chip they had in the parts bin right then and there. |
