View Full Version : Splitter Location Matter?
mekkerl 01-28-09, 03:00 PM I need to add another coax line to my new AV cabinet. There is currently a coax line just out side the cabinet on the main wall.
My choices are splitting the current line just below the floor in the basement. Or, running a new line, about 25', from the main panel; where it would come out of the main splitter (4-ports).
Is there a better way to go?
Any advice would be appreciated!
RCbridge 01-28-09, 03:54 PM It is a matter of the signal level.
If it is easy for you to run a seperate cable from the 4 way I would do that , but if it's not try the additional 2 way split.
mekkerl 01-28-09, 06:01 PM How would I find out the signal level?
Also, is the RG-6 cables selling on monoprice good cables?

Ive order the RG-6 cables from monoprice. No issues with them, for the money im not going to complain. Only funny issue I came across was nothing to do with TV signal, but I had issues using a fluke digital toner (cable locater) to locate cables; and went to analog mode. I was taking the tone at the center conductor since the shielding actually works.
I do however have a 500 foot spool of outdoor/carrier grade cable from Comcast (Given to me by my cable company during my home remodel)
The copper center conductor is a lot larger and heavy duty; ive been using that behind all my walls as its much higher quality cable. Any connection from my wall plate to TV ive been using monoprice stuff. If I have scrap cable I am going to crimp my own connections using the better stuff.
In real world application I don’t know if it make a difference.
Stealthlude 01-28-09, 07:19 PM Also, if you have a cable company...
Mine came out for free to verify all my work, and check the signal strength on everything. Mine also gave me all the splitters I required for free. (4 Way and a couple 2 ways in certain bedrooms)
Might want to look into that.
mekkerl 01-28-09, 07:28 PM Excellent idea; I'll see if they can come out to do that. Or, I found on another thread that this (http://www.cencom94.com/gpage11.html) site has good quality stuff.

That starter kit look ok... I wonder if the spool of coax from monoprice is like what I got from Time Warner (my cable company)... It seems like very good stuff.
Just get the tools you need, I like compression crimpers over the standard type... Ive been using the Ideal brand tool and the crimp heads I also got from my cable guy. Monoprice seems a lot cheaper on the parts and tools too; I would have no problem buying theirs.
These guys should come out and do it for free... I would do that first if you dont need the tools and spools of stuff. They even had someone come out and give me a new main drop to the house from the telephone poles.
The tech that came to my house was a really nice guy, gave me whatever I wanted to get the job done. Which company are you with?
mekkerl 01-28-09, 08:50 PM I'm with TW as well...but high speed internet only...we dropped cable for the dish.
I'll definitely give TW a call tomorrow morning and see what they can do...I don't need the tools, only to get a new access point...not to mention, save a few dollars in the process!
mekkerl 01-29-09, 09:55 AM I just got off the phone with TW; they can run the new line, but there is a charge for them to come out and do it...I'll do the math to see if the cost would be about the same for me to buy the equipment and do it myself...
Stealthlude 01-29-09, 01:37 PM What a bunch of crap =)
Maybe I should have told you I never actually tell the people over the phone what I want done. Ill just have a tech come out for some “trouble shooting”. For example ur cable model connection keep dropping, and you assume it may be a faulty connection because when you move the cable modem to a different location in the house it does not do it. Or just act extremely stupid…
Anything to get the tech to your house; once there at ur place these guys done give a crap… If I told you how much stuff and work I got done for free I think you would be upset having to pay for such a simple thing.
If you don’t mind me asking, can you PM me what there trying to charge you?

Don't listen to this guy. Nothing annoys us techs more than when we have a job added that has notes for replacing a coax connector and than the customer is asking for a new line ran down his hall to his new tv. It's a waste of your time and ours - we're not doing it.
The job's comments (what CSRs write for us based on what you request) are there for us to route our day (ie. I've got 3 10-2 appointments and that new line call is going to take 2 hours so I'll do that one last), prepare for the call (what tools I need to drag up - just a replacement remote?), and connect with the customer. If you feed in bad information it bucks the system for us.
If we're there to check your internet and you mention the cable going from your cable box to your vcr is a push-on rg59, ya, we'll replace that to help you out. Don't mistake when we are being helpful and trying to help you out as an invitation to have your own cable slave for a day to fix your messed up wiring.
