I have a residential installation as follows:
Bldg 1.
- Dish is located at this building.
- The multi-switch will be approx. 50' from the dish.
- Up to 4 TVs. Each may be connected to a DVR
Bldg 2.
- Approx 150'-200' from Bldg 1 (using same dish)
- Up to 4 TVs. Each may be connected to a DVR
Question:
- Can I do this with SWM?
- What kind of hardware do I need (switchers, splitters, dish, etc.)
- Pulling wire right now, need to know how many RG6 to run from Bldg 1 to Bldg 2.
- Final install will be in 4-6 months.
- Location in California, no sub-zero issues.

Can you just install two dishes?
If not you can split the feeds coming off of a normal 5 LNB dish to feed two SWM8's which in turn would give you 16 tuners worth of capacity.
Personally I'm not sure if you'd want both SWM8's at the dish location or one at each building. The first would require 1 RG6 run, the 2nd option would require 4.
You may want to post this question at sister site dbstalk.com, there is a Directv Install section there.

Why not just use 2 Dishes (1 at each building).
There was a question almost identical to this several weeks ago.
If you chose the 1 Dish route, easier to run the 4 RG6 from the single dish to a WB68 Multiswitch(available for about $10 now). Get 2 of the SWM-8 units (so you have the ability to add more units later), connect 1 SWM-8 to WB68 outputs 1-4 and the other to Outputs 5-8.
Then you just need a single RG6 from each SWM-8 to the building.
However, you would be wise to run additional RG6 while the building is under construction.

Think it would be cleaner to use splitters over a WB68? You could swap them out for 3 or 4 ways models to have room to add additional SWM8's if needed in the future.

Signal loss in splitters before the SWM-8. For whatever reason that I could never figure out as it was not externally powered, but the WB68 actually boosts numbers.

I guess it's leeching power from the receivers to amplify the signal.
