View Full Version : Help me make my final decison!!
Hello to all,
Ive been reading and reading in the last 2months and also visited best-buy, magnolia, and circuit city on many occasions to see the TV's in person. So, now time has come and would love to purchase a nice set so i could watch the super bowl this weekend and movies in the future. From your experience and knowledge in this field, and if you already have these sets at home which TV do you think is better overall and WHY?? (my budget is under $4200). Also, i mostly watch TV at night with dimmed lights, and sometimes sports during the day. Here are my choices:
SAMSUNG LN52A750
SAMSUNG LN55A950
PANOSONIC TH-58PZ800U
PANOSONIC TH-58PZ850U
I appreciate everyone's input and time, thx!
SystemShock2 01-29-09, 05:10 AM No Pioneer? No Sony XBR?
Lascivious1 01-29-09, 05:23 AM Samsung 850,860 or the new 950
what else is there?
SAMSUNG LN55A950 is the best set by far from your list.
Only 2 other sets out now are considered better than it, the Sony XBR8 & the Pioneer Kuros.
Any other input or suggestions would be appriciated. I need to make a decision by Sat, thank you
Cleveland Plasma 01-29-09, 06:40 PM Pioneer PDP-6020FD
Pioneer PRO-151FD ( Best flat panel out, period)
creemail 01-29-09, 06:47 PM I agree with CP!
However, the 58PZ800 would be my choice and here is why....
1. Its nearly the most inexpensive display that is selected, plus gives you size.
2. All of the displays will be phased out. You will have old technology on your hands.
3. If you spend near $4k you will want 2009 models. Everything is becoming thinner (slim profile design), more efficient, deeper blacks, and yes brighter.
4. The 58PZ800 serves as a purpose for a secondary display as you upgrade to this year's display. Although I am not sure if you plan on keeping this display for nearly 4-5 years.
5. Dropping over $4k right now gives you a 6020FD, but I will place my money and wait on the NEW Samsung LED's or PDPs, as well as the Panasonic PDPs. The downfall to waiting is that they won't be available until 3rd Quarter.

ok iam narrowing my choices down to,
PIONEER 6020FD
PANOSONIC 800U
SAMSUNG 950
Which one should I go with?? planning on keeping this set for at least few years....dont really care for the new line-up. Which TV out of the box would give me that WOW look and have fewer issues?
Thank you for all your help

You would be happy with any of the 3 sets you listed as they are all very nice,,, if your looking to save money, the Panasonic, if you want the very best picture the 6020FD,,, the Samsung is right in between the two in price and picture.
For me it was best picture, so to replace my 60" Pioneer 6070 I recently sold I odered the 6020 last week (it gets here Tues.)
The cheaper price of the Panasonic was very tempting, but for me, I wanted something that is going to totally knock me out every time I turn it on and by all accounts, thats the Kuro.
When in doubt, just get the best, that way you never have to wonder if you made the right choice.
Cheers

combatsambo 01-30-09, 09:13 AM Flex88-
New to the forum but have been reading up a little.
I'm in the same shoes as u, although I dont have a specific time frame for getting my set (not a football fan- MMA is the only sport I watch).
Anyway, I narrowed it down to pretty much the same choices you were making. Leaning real hard towards the Panny 58pz800u, until I took a LONG hard (over 1hr each at circuit city, BB, Samsung Exp.) look at the PQ.
In my opinion the LCDs blows the socks off any Plasma display- even the Pioneer 60". BB on 23rdst in Manhattan has the 950 right next to the Pioneer 60, in a darkened corner too i might add. The vibrant detailed color on U-571 blu, makes you feel almost like you are sitting in the submarine with the crew. I didn't get that feel with the Pioneer. The Pioneer does have better black level detail though, but to me the pic. seems rather flat and dull when compared to the 950 which gives you that immersive almost 3D like feel.
The racing scenes from Tokyo Drift was so life like it made me want to buy the movie just to admire the PQ. The Pioneer was great too, especially the details in black and grey areas and with a 60" size it was movie theater like.
If you are in NYC go down to the BB and compare the Pioneer and 950 right next to one another. I was SO CLOSE to hitting the order button for the Panny 800u too- in hind sight I am lucky I exercised some discretion first. For me its LCDs that gave me that WOW factor, espcially the 950- now as to which one to get...
Angie1313 01-30-09, 09:48 AM I would look into pricing out the SAMSUNG LN55A950, in my opinion.
davyo appriciate your help.....
one more question between the Kuro 6020, Samsung 950 and Panny 800u which set would have the best picture right out of the box?? or do i need to have it calibrated right from the start? Also which set will last me longer and cost less incase it breaks down? and will be watching mostly regular channels, high def, sports and movies here and there
I will put in order today!!
This web-site is been very helpful!! You guys are great!!
Thx again

SystemShock2 01-30-09, 02:38 PM Well Flex, you're lucky to be able to afford sets of that caliber.
Here's a tiny taste of what you're in for, pic quality wise: (at least w/Blu-ray) ;)

hhaller 01-30-09, 02:52 PM The 6020 will undoubtedly give you the best night-environment viewing, and it also has the best anti-reflective glare for daytime viewing.
Also, consider checking out the Forum sponsors for pricing.
combatsambo 01-30-09, 04:04 PM Another bit of info I forgot to mention that might help your decision.
At Samsung Experience they had the 950 set on movie mode and the PQ, as far as details in blacks and shaded areas, was just as good as the Pioneer, if my memory is correct- while still maintaining a more vibrant depth. Dark clothes, hair strands,... all were visible, even in scenes at night during The Watchmen trailer.

Phillips??
are you telling me its that good that it compares to the kuro 6020 or the samsung 950??
I want to the best overall TV between $4200 price range!!
BoilerJim 01-30-09, 06:01 PM i would highly recommend a philips. I just got the 7403 47 inch lcd. I like it very much.
JacobPhillips is a lower-tier brand that couldn't hold the Samsung 950's jock strap.
localnet 01-30-09, 06:09 PM Pioneer all the way.
I have the Sony 52" XBR2 and Sony KDL-46V3000, both have great pq. But, I stole both of these sets at the time, and don't regret it.
But, if I had my choice and the cash, no credit, cash. The Pioneer would be tops on my list followed by the Panasonic, no questions asked.
A well calibrated Pioneer will make your eyes bleed.

felonyr301 01-30-09, 08:00 PM I had a samsung rear projection that was a peice of crap.. the philips is a much better tv.
Jacob
When it comes to lcd's Samsung is one of the best philips is crap.
Jacob305 01-30-09, 08:40 PM I doubt it. why are you attacking me about the philips. I like my new tv.. I was just trying to help the other person choose a good tv. I don't know what your problem is.. I don't like it.

That's mean, but basically true. :(

So its OK fro you to call the Samsungs crap but its no OK for someone to point out that Philips is a low end brand,,, I dont get that:rolleyes:
i would highly recommend a philips. I just got the 7403 47 inch lcd. I like it very much.

While Im sure your Philips is a fine TV, the Kuro is considered the very best flat panel to be had, LCD or plasma.
Comparing a 47" Philips to a 50 or 60" Kuro is,,, well,,,,, Ok,, nevermind, Im not going to say it.
Cheers

vizo is releasing there new line here shortly and they are charging half of what samsung is charging for a 55 inch led, also its suppose to be 240hrz. I think you should at least wait to see how they perform. only thing that will happen till then is price drops on all major brands. thanks to vizo's insane pricing.
SystemShock2 01-30-09, 11:35 PM ^ Well, Vizio had to do something. The major brands have been price-dropping, and coming uncomfortably close to Vizio's prices, which had been hurting Viz.
This is like a shot back across the established brands' bows, if the set performs reasonably well.

I wasn't trying to be di#k or anything I just stated the fact. It don't matter if samsung and everyone else is crap when it comes to rear projection tvs and philips is king but when it comes to lcd tvs then yes philips is nothing compared to samsung or sony.
The best plasma tvs is pioneer and lcds is samsung or sony when looking for the best and disregarding lcd or plasma bias the best tv is pioneer elite tv out now. I just simply stated whats the best out now and not what was the best 5 or 10 years ago like who cares.

thats true however its still well worth the wait. vizo has been a solid product in my eyes in given the price of there new led, and its specs. its a no brainer for me i will wait in see every tv out get slayed and say i told you so to all the impatient meat heads.:D
I was ONLY interested in comparing the 6020fd to the 950 and maybe the Panny 800U
How did Philips and Vizio get in the pic????
But ok :)

Threads get hi-jacked sometimes.
While your interested in the 6020, the 950 and the 800U there is sometimes others that are more interested in telling you what they purchased, since they purchased it, they feel it is the best choice even when its not.
The three panels you are interested in are all great choices and deserve consideration.
I gota say though, I am still just knocked out by the post suggesting a Philips over a Pioneer Kuro,,,,,,,,, WOW !!!!!!!!
Cheers

I did not say that it was better then pioneer. I was just suggesting a philips tv.
you are twisting my words around.
Jacob
I never said you said the Philips was a better TV than the Pioneer,, perhaps you are the one twisting my words around.
What I was commenting on was how the topic was about the Kuro, reguarded by almost everyone on the planet as the BEST panel ever made and you posted the following:
i would highly recommend a philips. I just got the 7403 47 inch lcd. I like it very much.Jacob
For someone looking at buying a Kuro the chance they are going to be interested in a Philips are about zero.
Like I said before, Im sure your Philips is a nice TV and Im glad you are happy with it.
Its just that your post was a bit odd given the topic at hand.
As an example: If I was on a car forum looking at buying a Lexus and someone posted,, Hey,,, I just got a new Kia, I highly recomend it,,, I think you would agree that would be a bit odd,, right ???
As in, it would make no sense to suggest that someone looking to buy a Lexus should also check out a Kia.
Cheers

Jacob305 01-31-09, 01:01 PM it was not my intention to hijack this thread., I just wanted to state about my new tv and recommend it. if I offend the first poster here. I am sorry.
I am done with this stupid thread.

That's a problem with the 6020, you can't calibrate it well enough, do primarily to a lack is user controls. The Elite is another story.

The 6020 can be calibrated to give a person an excellent picture. It just doesn't have as many controls to fine tune as much as the Elite but that's not to say the 6020 or 5020 can't exhibit a very nice picture and often considered by many second only to the Elite.
:)
I finally purchased the Pioneer 6020fd and it will be delivered on Tue. I know for fact that I made the right choice buy getting the 6020 insted of the 950.
Dont get me wrong the 950 has bad ass pic bright and sharp but overall it cant touch the feel of the 6020. Thx for everyones input!!
what are the settings I should use after I plug the tv in? and is there a proper way to break in this sexy toy lol?
