View Full Version : Top 15 Must Have Titles on HD DVD
I have around 50 titles I bought after the demise of the format and even with price of under $5, there are titles I just would not buy. What would you say is the must-have top 15 titles would be for you. I just wanted to see if there's something I missed.
I saw HD DVD Owners: What Are The Top 5 Must-Have HD DVD Titles? (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=952368) but no one has posted for over a year. If the mods feel this should be in the same thread, feel free to merge them. Thank you.

If these aren't on your list your depriving yourself from Modern day classics.

mva5580 01-30-09, 04:46 PM Any movie that you personally want to own is a "must have" title on HD-DVD because of how much cheaper it is than the Blu-Ray version. Last week I purchased:
- Heroes S1
- Big Lebowski
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- Mallrats
- Van Helsing
- Serenity
All online for a combined $43, shipped. The price of Heroes S1 by itself on Blu-Ray always seems to be near the $70 range.
DrCrawn 01-30-09, 05:01 PM 1. Band of Brothers 5 disc set (hands down #1 HD DVD title)
2. T2 "Studio Canal" (remains the definitive HD version on any format)
3. The Matrix (pure demo bliss and a modern classic)
4. Casablanca (same transfer as the $40 Blu-ray version, lol)
5. Blade Runner (unreal 5 version set, cinemagasm for fans)
6. Freedom 1 or 2 (the HDi technology is simply amazing)
7. Serenity (first HD DVD and still one of the best)
8. Rio Bravo (the best western released on HD DVD in the U.S.)
9. In the Shadow of the Moon UK import (feel good Ron Howard, breathtaking rare archival footage remastered in HD, hard to find now)
10. Hot Fuzz (frankly an amazing movie, an epic Dolby Digital Plus EX track)
11. South Park: Good Times with Weapons (good times indeed)
12. Bonnie and Clyde (one of the last rare Warner titles actually worth owning)
13. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938 never looked so good, HD Looney Tunes)
14. The Matador (the only must own Weinstein release, woefully underrated)
15. Saw uncut German import (4 star horror/suspense)
1. Band of Brothers 5 disc set (hands down #1 HD DVD title)
Yeah... I'm watching it now with my 89 year old dad. At the end of each episode we just sit through the closing credits... stunned... listening to the music until it goes silent. Then we take a breath and bring up the lights.
cobolisdead 01-30-09, 08:27 PM It is a good title, but It's also the most expensive HD DVD set out there. It's actually cheaper to buy a BD player and the the BDs than to buy the imports.

Oh... that's right. I have so many HD DVD's I forgot I got this one on Blu-ray. $35.99... quite a deal!
Possibly in order of importance (to me):
Children of Men
The Big Lebowski
Shaun of the Dead
Star Trek - The Original Series - Season 1
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Matrix Trilogy
Hot Fuzz
Batman Begins
Into the Wild
Pianist, The
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Casino
Touching the Void
Elephant Man
One Six Right
TheCrackedJack 01-30-09, 11:33 PM The must have ones are the ones not available on BD like The Big Lebowski or Hot Fuzz. Or discs like Equilibrium that were botched on import BD. The Bourne Trilogy, Serenity, ect have better versions on BD, so I wouldn't call them must haves.

The most glaring example is probably The Thing, which looks clearly inferior on the BD (probably due to increased noise filtering). I'd recommend getting these titles while they are still available.
Back to topic, off the top of my head my recommendations would be: Blade Runner, Zodiac, Hot Fuzz, Matrix Trilogy, T2 (either the French Studio Canal or the German Kinowelt verision), Band of Brothers, Star Trek Season 1. Then there are still a lot of great exclusive titles that are not even announced on BD, e.g. Children of Men, Forbidden Planet, The Deer Hunter, The Matador, The Big Lebowski, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Inside Man, Wolf Creek, Stalingrad (French import), 3 Days of the Condor (European import) and probably about a hundred more.

dad1153 02-02-09, 08:33 AM 2001: A Space Odyssey (still the most jaw-dropping title in the thinking/breathing/experiencing 'this is what high-definition is all about' being-there moment);
I Am Legend;
Children of Men;
Hot Fuzz (so much stuff crammed into one HD-30 disc, yet the picture/sound are outstanding);
The Matrix Trilogy (the first movie is much better than the sequels but, as a whole, one hell of a demo Box Set);
The Shining (high-def + children's tricycle + gliding steadycam + creepy hotel = soiled pants! :p)
Grand Prix;
Serenity;
That's Entertainment Trilogy;
Casablanca;
Pan's Labyrinth;
Batman Begins;
Battlestar Galactica S1;
The Adventures of Robin Hood;
Planet Earth (the most useful tool to turn a non-HD believer into a mouth-breathing high-def nut);
The Host.
The scary thing is that a lot of these Top 15 movies mentioned here I already own but haven't gotten around watching yet. My list is sure to expand when/if I get around watching more HD-DVD's! :D

Right there with you. I need to get around to watching more of my HD DVDs.
Surprisingly large number of votes for Hot Fuzz.
Quentin2 02-02-09, 01:53 PM I also own a lot of these recommended movies but haven't watched them yet, including Hot Fuzz. Gotta make some time for them. Saturday night we watched The Brave One and though it wouldn't be in many Top 15 lists but the PQ was amazing. Gotta love HD!

13. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938 never looked so good, HD Looney Tunes)
Nor did Olivia de Havilland :) but the director had her wear that silly headdress for most of the movie which muted her beauty. Plus amazing colors from such an old movie signally the inherent quality in the 3 strip Technicolor of the time
