At that price DIY really doesn't seem necessary. Furniture grade materials would run about $100 (SWAG) per unit. If you still want to do it , go to IKEA and see how theirs is made.

i've assembled 2 of these (and 1 of them 3 times as it's been moved around the house) in the past 6 months. pretty easy to assemble and good value.....is heavy though so make sure anchor to wall....

I believe that is the LACK series from IKEA as mentioned. I have some of that series and it is great. IKEA also sells a boxes in a variety of finishes and materials that will fit perfectly in those little cubbyholes.

I also use a lot of the BESTA series which is super configurable with lots of neat little addon's.
