View Full Version : Philips DVDR3575 problems worsening...

I posted about 5 months ago about a problem I was having with my Philips DVDR3575 -- during extended periods of recording, switching from digital to analog and then back to digital, the system would freeze.

Now I'm experiencing a new problem and I think it's time to have the unit repaired or replaced. After about an hour of recording, either Pause Live TV or a timed record, a big red box will appear on the screen that says "System Error! - Turn Off System" or something to that effect. All buttons become unresponsive and I'm forced to unplug the system to power it down.

Is it time to take advantage of my extended Wal-Mart warranty? Or is there a 'scandisk' feature I can run that may fix the problem?

Been dealing with that. It is in your shifting from digital to analog and will definitely happen if you have HDMI as the digital input to your tv. Stay with component.

Most all of the system error problems I have had are with HDMI and the 3575 interface. The back and forth shifts from digital to analog seldom give a system error if you are in component unless there is a shift to a line input somewhere in the process, then you will lose the digital channel signal and record a blue screen. The line input problem happens when you use the channel up/down and go into the line inputs or through them to go to a or d.

So if I switch from HDMI to component, this problem will stop? Interesting. I'll give that a try. Thanks!

Wow, HOW are you switching from digital to analog while recording... my 3575 won't allow that during a timer or manual rec, which makes sense since then the recording would have a diff. channel whenever you switch?

It's not one continuous recording -- recording stops, switches channel, then starts up again.

Here's an example of the problem I'm having:

7:00-8:00 - Channel 77.2 (digital)
8:00-9:00 - Channel 2 (analog)
9:00-10:00 - Channel 78.2 (digital)

The problem occurs when the unit goes back to digital after recording the analog channel. On the 2nd switch to digital, the unit will often just freeze or lock-up, but recently a big red box has been appearing with "System Error". I've also noticed this when switching between my TV inputs. If I switch from one HDMI input (Philips DVR) to my other HDMI input (XBox360) and then back, the red box will usually be on the screen (this happened last night... Conan was recording, switched over to my XBox360 to download the Fallout 3 expansion, switched back and "System Error").

My unit has just been acting really wierd lately with that "System Error" message... seems like it's been popping up a lot. I'll try out the component cables and see if it helps.

If I read your post correctly, I'd also try a Monoprice cable,,, they're cheap enough and everyone here swears by them. Se their ad at top of page?

Second that. I buy all my connectors from them and have never been disappointed with quality. I had to replace the directv provided hdmi cable with a Monoprice as it was much better.

One other thing to do is after you shift to component, pull the plug on your tv, cable box, or just about everything in your system and let everyone get reacquainted. HDMI does strange things in a system.

I bought most of my HDMI cables from Ebay or Abucus cables. Monoprice does have great cables but I can usually get a even better price shopping deal sites and knowing what specs and kind of cable to look for.
If you don't want to bother with all the hassle Monoprice is the safest and best place to just get a excellent set of cables for a good price.

I actually had a spare set of component cables that came with my HDTV. Got everything hooked up last night, but all of our timed records don't start again until Monday... so we'll see how it goes.

Set up a test recording.

Well it's been a week and a half since I switched from HDMI to component and haven't had a single lock-up, freeze, or error since. All of our timed recordings have worked perfectly and that stupid red box hasn't been popping up every 10 minutes.

Thanks for the tip!
