View Full Version : Gary Dell'Abate's (Bababooey from Howard Stern) HT
Over the past two days the guys on the show were arguing about whether or not it was a good idea for Gary to put in stools instead of another row of chairs in his newly built HT. What is the general consensus on this sort of thing?

BIGmouthinDC 01-30-09, 08:56 AM Stools because it gives you an elbow to elbow standing room only section if you have that size crowd.
I have stools and chairs and at my last get together I observed that some guys picked a stool even when chairs were available.
Many times, when I come home just in time for something I want to watch, I will finish my dinner at the sit at bar then join the misses in the front row for the rest of the show.

Agreed, I have been listening to stern as well and then they replayed it today and he is clueless on this point. Even if it gets used just once or twice for me and when we have a party that makes it worth it. While it would still happen, do you want a guy with a plate of wings sitting down on your leather chair for the big game? Theater seats are awesome and the more the merrier but at the same time the bar with stools adds that extra little bit for big crowds for a big game. Or like Big said, if I want to eat dinner while watching something, I can. I mean for a game/party you are always getting up and down and talking, so the stools are good, it is not like a movie where you are sitting quietly for 2 hours not getting up. Howard is wrong on this one and they all have no clue, it depends on what you are going for.
Look at Art, he has like 20 seats in his place with no bar, but thats what he wanted, but would he like a bar? I dont know...I think it is all in the eye of the beholder, depends on the look and feel you are going for, some like the bar concept, others dont and in this case Howard just doesnt understand. I mean I look at it like this, if someone comes over and criticizes why I have a counter instead of big leather seats, I can always remind them they arent a prisoner and can go home and watch the game on their crappy 42" at home by themselves...
...short answer, I really think it is all personal preference as to the look, style and feel you are going for.
and for me, +1 for the bar counter and stools.
First of all, I havent listened to the show in a while due to commuting situations, but I did hear about his theater being built. The theater looks awesome! Whoever did this job did it well.
I have to say with 2 rows (8 seats), having a 3rd row with the counter and stools or chairs is the way to go. This offers the most flexibility and its very likely that for the majority of the time, 2 rows of theater seating will be plenty.
Way to go Fa-Fa-Fo-Fly!
tlogan6797 01-30-09, 09:22 AM Even in my smaller room I plan to add a dry bar behind the seats. I think it's a good idea for a crowd that will be comming and going and not have to disturb the people that want to sit and watch for longer periods.
I had been listening to that argument and I think they are raggin' on him for the wrong thing. The ba-ba-bigger problem is his TV above the fireplace.
dc_pilgrim 01-30-09, 09:22 AM I have been wondering when this thread would pop up. The point Stern makes is that Gary feels put out by taking a stool when he has guests. I would imagine that any good host who has access to the room 100% of the time would be unconcerned about taking a lesser seat 2% of the time when entertaining. But that doesn't make good radio.
There are some pics of the space on Stern's website, but I am not going to link them in from work. I think he should have gone darker, and he should add acoustic treatments. I'd love to see build shots of the HT.

he was talking about the acoustic treatments, heard it this morning on the best of...They were asking about the speakers on the wall and he said the room isnt actually complete yet and that he still needs acoustic panels, so he is going to have them...

Im actually with Howard on the matter. Gary already has the "man cave" for entertaining large amounts of guests with a full bar, pool table, flat panels, etc. For a dedicated home theater room the last thing you want is guests pouring drinks in the dark and making noise while everyone is trying to watch a movie. A simple full functional built in (with running water ) right outside the room would easily handle the job and allow everyone in the theater to have equal comfort without forcing the unlucky to sit on stools.
*edit* From watching the man cave video it seems like the man cave is right outside the Home Theater room so there is no reason to not have guest get their drinks and food from out there.

You know, I thought the HT was his Man Cave build. If this is in addition to that space, and especially if it is adjacent like you've said, that does change my opinion a bit.

BIGmouthinDC 01-30-09, 11:39 AM If this was Howard theater one of the chairs would be a tickle chair and another a sex machine. One would be reserved for queefers only.
BIGmouthinDC 01-30-09, 02:02 PM The theater looks awesome! Whoever did this job did it well.
Well not quite.
Front speakers look like they are contained in cabinets.. a no,no.
L/R speakers hugging the outside walls.. a no no.
No acoustical treatments (promised?)
A 2:35 movie is going to be really small from the back rows, He would have better off going with a AT 2:35 SMX screen with the speakers behind the screen. (I have the same problem that I need to fix)
Room is a little bit too small for 4 wide theater seats. The farthest right seats sit too close to the side wall.
Probably no soundproofing
but, it looks nice.

I agree; when you first look at it, it looks nice enough. But when you really inspect it, the room does look a little small for that many seats, and I don't understand why...with an entrance on the front-side like it has...you needed to move the seats off-center so you have a walk-thru on the left; I would have preferred the rows were centered, and you stepped up to the riser on either side.
And not to nitpick, because my HT isn't even done, and when it is, this will still be nicer than mine, but the columns, walls, and fixtures look a little bare to me; this room would really do nicely with some panels. I guess you just really come to expect a lot from a professional install like this, when you're spoiled by what some of the DIYers do in here.
Poor Ma-Ma-Monkey; like he isn't getting enough sh*t on the air.

ImRonMexico 01-30-09, 02:13 PM Wow so many Stern Fans, surprising, I thought I was def in the Minority but Mega Smega to you all!
The only baba blunder her made is that the bar really isnt a BAR, its a counter. I dont understand why there is no shelving or cabinets at the "bar"
I love the look, and it seems Howard just has to rip everything apart that isn't his idea. I love him but Gary's setup is amazing. I love it and I'm very jealous of Lucas and Jackson, other then they are fans of the METS! TERRIBLE!
Goodbye for Now! EHHHH

That's exactly what I've been doing lately with mine - our son loves eating up there too, thinks he's the big dude at the bar! :). Having had a few functions in mine, I've noticed it really works with the spillover, as fellow parents stand at the bar and can quickly run to the next room to see how their kids are doing.
If I'm going to have a serious film viewing, I wouldn't have more than 8 people anyway, I think it turns more into a social function by nature than a serious viewing event.

Name that chair for $200, Alex what is the Berkline 54090 in a straight arm configuration?
(well at least it looks like it) Not sure of the color and leather grade.

smakovits 02-01-09, 12:17 AM After looking at the pictures, the only thing I question is access to the bar. My thinking would be if you are at the bar, this is where there will be lots of traffic, but the cray thing is it looks as though the only way to get to the bar is to walk next to the comfy chairs...I would think you would need a door or something to access it from the side.
Jesse S 02-01-09, 03:08 AM While listening to Stern, I agreed with Gary. But in my mind, I imagined some of the rear bar areas that people here have built in their theater.
When I saw the pics I changed my mind. The 3rd row has no extra functionality except for that snack-width piece of granite. It's built as a dedicated theater so that's what it should be. It looks odd and only has 8 seats suited to moving watching.

I like Bababooey's theater. I listen to stern every morning and overheard something that made me wanna call in. I cant remember exactly how it went, but didnt a guy call in saying that he could do a 1080p theater for something like 4-5G's? Gary was arguing back saying not possible or something?
Anyways we all know you can do it for 4-5 or even less. Love Gary, but he's wrong on that point.
Back to the topic at hand though, I really like his theater, the only thing id change is a spot at the back for some guitars/computer ;) and I'd probably loose a bit of the orange....little too much. Other than that its really nice. Not quite as elaborate as I thought it was going to be though..

It looks like he has two sets of side surrounds (one next to each row of theater seats) -- you can see the rears and the 2nd set of sides in this picture (not the first set of sides though)? How does that work? How does a receiver handle that? Isn't that 9.1?

In that case you would just hook speaker to speaker as far as I know ..That way each area has the same sound. Thats the way I would do it.

Well, yes and no; if you hadn't just caught snippets (and isn't that the way things always get misconstrued on the Stern show...lol) you would have heard the main point of Gary's argument (and Howard agreed with this point as well btw) was you can't even get his Crestron system, and touchscreen controller, for $4-5k. Now whether that is true or not, it obviously meant Gary's argument was based on room and equipment. His Crestron, what's he got, a VW-60?...probably Stewart screen...electronics, 7 speakers, recliners, carpets, etc...and room build.
Now if the caller's argument, and now yours, is that a "1080p" room can be built for $4-5k, equipment and all, well I suppose that's possible...if you go with a less expensive pj, less expensive screen, less expensive everything. But then that argument is almost like saying to your neighbor "hey, why'd you pay $75k for that Mercedes; I could have gotten you a car that'll drive 65mph on the highway for $15k". No one's building that room for $4-5k.

Speaker to speaker? What does that mean? Each speaker generally has one place to attach speaker wire (+ and -). So how would you attach more than one? And what about on the AVR end too?
BIGmouthinDC 02-01-09, 01:44 PM speaker to speaker would simply add a wire connecting the + and - terminals between the two speakers on each side. On the one speaker that already has wires to the amp you just twist the two wires together and secure to the terminals The result is speakers are connect in parallel. You need to check the impedance of your speakers because two speakers in parallel has 1/2 the original value. If you get it too low you can do harm to your amplifier. If it gets too low it's like shorting the output terminals on the amp with a wire.
Your amp should have a specification/rating indicating how low you can go. The speakers should have a stated impedance.
hitchfan 02-01-09, 03:40 PM I agree with Bababooey on this. If you were only going to watch movies in that room, fine. In that case, you're going to anchor yourself in a seat and stay there for the next couple of hours.
But if you're also going to fire up the home theater for televised events like the Super Bowl or The Oscars, then a bar with stools in the back is a great idea. There are commercial breaks, people are going to be moving in and out of the room. Some guests might pop into the HT for a moment or two before the next commercial break and stand in the back. Where would they put their drinks or their snacks if not for the bar? On the floor?
Even if you had the Super Bowl or The Oscars running in the Man Cave, are you saying you wouldn't fire up the HT projector for it, too, if you had 20 guests over to watch? Of course you would.
Howard was also wrong about putting a couch at the top of the risers in place of the bar so you could stretch out, lay down and watch a movie on it. You can't put a couch in the last row and lay down on it, the back rests of the seats in front of you will block your view. A couch for stretching out and laying down works in the front row, not the back row, right?
Now, I do wonder why there are electrical outlets behind the last row of seats on the opposite side of the bar fixture. Howard brought that up and maybe I've missed what the purpose of that is or why the outlets aren't on the other side of the bar...?

Im of the camp that a dedicated theater is just that. You dont add bar space and remove a row of seats because you may have some people over for an event a couple times a year and need somewhere to put a cup, especially when there is a full bar right outside the door.
Btw someone on SFN did a pic of what it would look like with the 3rd row...

If you want to plug in a lap-top or warming plate for the nachos. You don't want anyone stepping on the cord or a loop hanging down. It would be the same reason why you have outlets around counters in a kitchen. You never know what you might want to plug in.
