Latest ATI Linux Video Driver Introduces Full OpenGL 3.0 Support

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Latest-ATI-Linux-Video-Driver-Introduces-Full-OpenGL-3-0-Support-103262.shtml

AMD has just announced a new and improved version of its ATI Catalyst Linux display driver, available for both x86 and x86_64 architectures. ATI Catalyst 9.1 introduces final and stable support for the Ubuntu 8.10 Linux operating system, full OpenGL 3.0 support, Hybrid CrossFire support and Multiview support.

While the support for Ubuntu 8.10 is now in a mature stage, the newly introduced support for Hybrid Graphics delivers to its AMD 780G/780D and ATI Radeon HD 2400/3400 owners a substantial 3D performance boost. But, the most important feature of ATI Catalyst 9.1 is the full support for OpenGL 3.0. The following OpenGL 3.0 extensions have been added in ATI Catalyst 9.1:

· ARB_framebuffer_object
· ARB_half_float_vertex
· ARB_texture_rg
· EXT_texture_array
· EXT_texture_integer
· EXT_transform_feedback
· NV_conditional_render
· WGL/GLX_create_context (for new 3.0 contexts)
· GLSL 1.3
· ARB_color_buffer_float
· ARB_vertex_array_object
· EXT_draw_buffers2.

Last but not least, ATI Catalyst 9.1 allows users to render applications using single or multiple GPU configurations with individual displays. The following graphics cards are supported by the Multiview feature: ATI Radeon 2000 and 3000 series. The Multiview settings can be found in the "Display Properties" tab of the Catalyst Control Center. For more details about the resolved/known issues in this release, take a look at the official release notes in PDF format.

Requirements:

· X.Org 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 or 7.4
· Linux kernel 2.6 or higher
· glibc version 2.2 or 2.3
· Support for POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) is necessary for 3D programs
· The following packages should be installed on your system: XFree86-Mesa-libGL, libstdc++, libgcc, XFree86-libs, fontconfig, freetype and zlib.

Any takers?

Tearing issues? CPU utilixation?

CAT 9.1 appears to support GPU's all the way down to the 9600/9550, so pull out those dusty AGP 9xxx cards and get crackin' :D

well well, do I want to go back....I guess it can't hurt to give it a whirl as I have my 8400 GS on standby.

these issues seems to have been fixed:

Linux Desktop fails to render in SuSE 11 with ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics in big desktop mode
Xserver fails to start on ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

Also, this is interesting:
On Novell's openSUSE, SLED and SLES operating systems running
“sax2” or “sax2 -r” on the console overwrites the X.Org configuration
file xorg.conf, reverting changes made by running “aticonfig --initial”.
As a result subsequent X session may start up using the open source
Radeon on X-Vesa graphics drivers instead of the proprietary ATI
Linux Graphics Driver.
Solution: Do not use Sax2 when the proprietary Linux Graphics Driver
is installed. Instead configure all display parameters using the Catalyst
Control Center--Linux Edition or the aticonfig command line interface.

To anyone planning to test Cat 9.1 for video quality:

TURN OFF/disable COMPIZ first.

In Ubuntu/Mint:

System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->None

You can test with "Normal" or "Extra" effects later, but first get a baseline without Compiz.

so VDPAU with add-on Nvidia is still better?

Actually support for HW deinterlacing is what I need. I almost never see any tearing using the open source driver. I guess if they reduce the CPU utilization that would help me with my SW Deinterlace issues.

I'd give it a whirl on 9800pro, but IIRC, the last time I tried to update to new ATI drivers I coundn't because I'm still using Hardy which has an older version of X than what the new ATI drivers require.

Since Canonical should have enough time to add it into the Jaunty release, I'm probably just wait until then before trying it.

[ed. Maybe I'll start tracking the Jaunty alphas and try it as soon as it shows up. If anyone happens to notice it in the Jaunty alphas, please post a notice. ]

...

I'm happy to report that on a Compaq 6820s laptop with ATI Radeon Mobile X1350 that Catalyst 9.1 combined with Compiz 0.7.8-28.1 completely corrected all my problems with Compiz.
No more video flicker problems, no more OpenGL application slow-down and flicker problems! I no longer need to kill Compiz to run OpenGL applications or watch videos.

I am one satisfied customer, let me tell you.

Awesome news!

I'll have to see if I get the same results on a Radeon 9550...

Why did you go and say something like that?

Now you've made me want to run out and buy a 6820. ;) :D

Oh, this entry in the Jaunty Repo change log doesn't sound so good:

fglrx-installer (2:8.573-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

* New upstream release. (9-1).
- This release still does *not* meet the Xorg server 1.6 ABI.
It is being uploaded to ensure that there are no other integration
related issues that come up.

I have still flickering video with this Ati driver and Compiz 0.7.8.
Can I ask how you installed Compiz 0.7.8-28.1???
If I type compiz --version, I get:
"compiz 0.7.8".

I tried to install the version from ppa.launchpad.net/compiz/ubuntu, but even if more recent it results more unstable and it is not 0.7.8-28.1 anyway!

Thank you,

Here is the post for posterity

Radeon 2100 (796e) & GA-MA74GM-S2 jerky video solved
I added the following three options to my xorg.conf file

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "fglrx"

Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "TexturedVideo" "on"

EndSection

and in VLC player I used the XVideo extension output module.

Unfortunately this solution did not work for me.

I have ATI X1400 and I confirm that it not possible yet to watch video decently.

All you've confirmed is that you can't do it. The X1400 is rated for HD playback. Now If I can HD playback from a 740G chipset that's not rated for HD I'd bet the farm the X1400 can do it since its rated for HD playback.

You'd simply lose your bet then...

Then don't use compiz. Ever thought perhaps it was the problem? I think it even causes problems with Nvidia cards. Couldn't say, as I never tried it, and don't intend to. I'm not even sure if it would work with the WM I use (IceWM). I don't need all the crap in those other bloated WM's.

That is not such a big help for whoever has ATI & WANTS to use compiz.

While I haven't checked the status on the Windows forum recently, I suspect that Aero (Windows Compiz equivalent) isn't recommended to be on for Windows HTPC's.

Those 3D desktop effects just take away CPU, RAM, and cause video playback problems.

It's easy enough to toggle on/off, so turn Compiz on when you're not doing video playback, and off when are are watching a movie.

After bashing my head against a few walls, I'm at a loss on the AMD/ATI HD3200 drivers. I continue to get horizontal screen tearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fresh Mythbuntu install: horizontal screen tearing
Update to ATI drivers (Mythbuntu repo): horizontal screen tearing
Upgrade to 9.1 drivers from AMD/ATI website
- follow instructions for Intrepid install (twice): horizontal screen tearing
Upgrade to 9.2 drivers from ADM/ATI website
- follow instructions for Intrepid install: horizontal screen tearing

What the hell over!? I HAVE to have this working on my HD 3200. No slots left for external video board.

Audio out HDMI is no worries here. Just want a video that doesn't have horizontal tearing when the screen gets busy.

WTF over!

Did you disable compositing/Compiz?

System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->None

Visual Effects are set to "Normal" (which means compositing/Compiz is ON) by default after an Ubuntu install.

This causes tearing.

After coming across a review for the J & W Minix-ITX board (http://www.jwele.com/motherboard_detail.php?419#_spec), I was thinking of creating a mythtv box again. However, I used Nvidia cards in the past for XvMC ability with a slower CPU. I'm not that familiar with ATI cards.

From what I've read, the mpeg acceleration on ATI cards did not work under linux, however with ATI's update, does this mean that acceleration will now work under linux?

Thx.
