has anyone ever insulated a hollow core door? I assume this would be better for sound isolation? I was thinking along the lines of filling it with foam or something. Any ideas would be appreciated. Its a standard prehung Lowes jobber.

Hollow core doors aren't really hollow -- they have a core of cardboard in a kind of a grid pattern. The cardboard core would prevent foam from expanding more than an inch or two from any point at which it was injected.

You'd have better luck swapping the hollow core door out for an inexpensive solid core door. Weatherstripping around the edges and at the bottom will also help with sound containment.

I was afraid I might hear something like that. Thanks.

I'm in the same situation and it seems the only option is to swap it out for a solid core door...

My neighbor, cut the bottom off, his door, then filled it with runny cement grout and let it harden. He couldn't lift by himself, much less hang it. Don't what got into him. It's one of those, "Well it seemed like a good idea at the time." :-)

Buy a solid pre hung door and just re-hang it. Most are all standard in regards to hinge and latch hole placement, just take your tape measure.

I took the measurements for my hinges to Lowe's and ordered a Safe and Sound door. Fit perfectly. If you do it be sure to measure from the top of the door down.
