My NEC 6PG+ keeps turning off the tubes. It is becoming more frequent. I use a low contrast setting, High Power screen, and have a hush box fan with temp monitor. It is not to do with abusing it. I have had this projector for over a decade and it has had some moderate use. The tubes still look decent but why does it keep stop sending signal to the tubes? It started happening for around 30 seconds it would shut off the tubes and I would be left in the dark, now the time is becoming longer. After I got it back on this morning after it was off for a rather long time, the signal had jaggie looking triangles that were moving in the image. I found them in the blue and red tubes. I entered a new signal entry which cleared the strange shapes, but it shut down again before I could do the calibration. It will come back on again still. Any ideas what is wrong with it?

Possible your deflection board is going out.

Does the whole projector shut down or does the picture just go out. Can you still hear the fans when the picture goes out. If you dont hear the fans is there a code displayed on the back of the projector. If you still hear the fans, hit the menu button and see if you have a menu.

I took some insulation out from above the projector hoping that might help but I thought running the hush box fan 24/7 would have done the trick. The tubes did not go out yesterday while watching some movies.

The picture goes out and the fan stops running, but there is still a high pitched kind of noise and the green lights on the back stay on. I did not see any codes displayed. Turning the pj off then back on again did not fix it. If I hit info on the remote or try to acceess the menu nothing was displayed. I did manage once to get it to come back on again by unplugging the power cord, waiting for the yellow lights in the back to go off, then turning it back on again. When it went off again, I tried the same thing, and it did not help.

Whole projector shuts down, but stays on.

There are two leds on the deflection board - if they are lit, deflection has failed.

Thank you all for your help so far. I have not had problems with the projector going off for a few days and it was going off more than twice a day. I will let you know what the back says if the problem comes up again.

It went off again and isn't coming back on I reckon. There are two green LED's that flash then the yellow faintly flickers until it is solid, that goes off then then it's back to to the two LED's flashing geen again. It wasn't doing that before. How easy is it and what does it cost to replace a deflection board. I'm thinking of just getting a cheap digital pj instead.

green LED's light up for brief moment, then off
yellow light flickers until solid, goes off

- repeats in that order

I was taking down my hush box cover and I bumped the projector and it came on. The back says 00 and the other lights are green. I can turn it off and on. When I input a signal it recognizes the resolution but it does not display an image from the source, only a white box. I checked and each tube will come on/off and the menu works. Any ideas? I have bought a new projector but is this one obselete now? Should I consider selling it for parts? I could not find a deflection board.

I've got all the parts in stock for the set more or less. Sounds like you have a bad system board, not a deflection board.

A suggestion might be to try reseating all the boards in the card cage.

I will see what I can do once I get the projector down. I'm not giving up on the projector just yet, but it is leaving the theater room soon because of our limitations with the space.

I have a new digital projector that seems to be working alright so far but it is still in it's early hours of operation. I was wanting to use the 6PG+ possibly for another room.

I was able to at least get a closer look at each of the boards but it looks difficult to get to the area of the inputs and the upper board running horizontal does not want to seem to budge. I looked around the area trying to remove things to get to it but I can't seem to figure out how to get a closer look at that one. I tried setting up an input for video again also but still no picture. Are there any suggestions what to try next?

Have you read Curt's layout guide for the PG?

I have no idea what you are saying.

Just take the 3 boards out of the card cage on the middle left of your pic using the white levers and put them back in again. With the projector unplugged!
