I've recently been having a problem with my Panasonic DVR where when I record a program onto the hard drive, and then play it back, the sound is out of sync with the video.

I've got the cable (no box) coming directly into the unit, and then being output to the tv via the component1 jacks.

The unit I'm using is the Panasonic DMR -EH75V

Sounds like the HDD may be going south. Do you have a lot of content on the HDD? Could be fragmented and having trouble keeping up. If you can accommodate it, try reformatting the HDD.

Okay, this sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not. Were you watching the program while you were recording it? Are you sure the audio was in sync from the source? There have been reports for many years about DVD players and audio/video sync issues so this is hardly new, but if it's new to your experience with your EH75, then I agree, the first suggestion is a disk reformat. If that does not cure the problem, you will have already taken the content off the HDD so replacing it won't be very traumatic.

Church, I was thinking the same thing. Many times I've seen the sound and picture out of sync, and that's watching it live:eek:

jangona - I'm glad you brought up this topic. I'm brand new to recording shows to a DVDR, myself.

I noticed this problem with something recorded off History HD (through my cable box). I don't think I've experienced any out-of-sync sound when using the DVDR's tuner. To avoid this, I suppose I could have set the show to record off the analog History (SD) channel feed, but the picture quality is much better from the HD channel through the box.

So, it can be a matter of which do you prefer...better picture or perfectly timed sound? Terrible that we should have to make that decision isn't it? I blame insufficient bandwidth from the cable company...or the video processor in the cable box is underpowered. That's just my guess because, like jjeff, I observe this watching live TV at times, as well -- particularly on digital channels. I haven't recorded anything yet on digital not going through my box, so I'll be interested to see if I have any sync issues there.

At a superbowl party where I was at Sunday night, the picture and sound were HORRIBLY out of sync.

Since your name is Steeltownguy I'll take it you don't live in Minneapolis, but in MSP our local forum has had several posts about poor sync on the superbowl on our local digital NBC channel. People were thinking it was more of a local thing since apparently not much has been said on AVS about this. I don't watch football(or follow programming threads) so I can't say personally but I do know our local digital NBC station (I'm only OTA) has many issues with out of sync sound.
I'm more of a CBS guy and occasionally notice it there but I have noticed it occasionally on NBC too.
You're right though, it mostly effects digital channels while analogs seem OK. Personally I'd prefer a better picture over "in sync" sound but it would be nice to have both.

Yeah, the picture quality was excellent on our live local NBC feed, but the sound was WAY off. I prefer PQ over sound sync, too, but it can be frustrating.

Interesting update from my prior post. That show I was watching on my DVDR through the cable box (on History HD) turned out NOT to have much of a sound sync issue as previously thought. Strange as it may seem, the sync issue occurred during playback while the DVDR was busy recording another show. I went back and watched it later while the DVDR was not busy multitasking and the sound sync was okay.

That would suggest processing power in the Magnavox H2160 is what is actually underpowered. If that's true, it's a poor design. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for this problem as I get more accustomed to using it. I haven't heard reports about this, so it may only occur under very specific circumstances or, perhaps, this was just an isolated incident.
