View Full Version : Some advice on a AV Rack?

I'm going to use a In-wall setup, so I'm trying to decide btwn. the MA Slim 5 or the AXS setup. I'm going for 29u x 26" deep.

There will be a spot in the wall cutout for the unit to fit perfectly in, I have to let the builder know my dimensions on Monday which is why I'm trying to hurry and decide which I want.

Where the unit will be installed, the back of the components will go into the attic space, but not actually into the attic (it won't be a whole in the wall, it will be a built in shelve into the wall). If that makes sense...

So in order to access all my cables I have 2 options, I can get the AXS setup and be able to pull the unit out of the wall...but then I have to get the rails and those stands and whatever else it takes to be able to slide the rack out.

or

I can install the Slim 5 into the space, then cut out the back of the "shelf" so I have complete access to the back of the components from the attic. You wouldn't really notice the cut out since I plan on using the custom racks which would eliminate all the gaps so you wouldn't really see through.

The problems I can see arising w/ both are...if I do the Slim 5 option, I will have an open space from the media room to the attic, which means, hot air from the attic in the summer will be coming straight into the media room making the AC work harder, plus the sound from the media room will go into the attic therefor I'm assuming it would extend it throughout the house making it louder everywhere else.

If I do the AXS sliding system then like stated earlier, I have to use those rails and stands to pull the rack out, the cost is much higher, and I would think that since the components are all in a wall space then there won't really be any cool air or air movement going on and things would be hotter.

Any opinions? I'm sure others have had this debate. Hopefully it all made since.

Basically, to open up my media room to the attic via the rack opening or spend more, keep it sealed, but possibly have hotter components and deal w/ the sliding system?

Edit: Thought I should add that the attic space will be extremely easy to get to if I go w/ the Slim 5 option. It's just a matter of walking around a corner and opening a door.

I would go with plan C. Use the slim line, and build a wall inside the attic so that the equipment isn't exposed directly to the heat, nor creates an opening into the room. Then I'd add a fan so to draw heat away from the equipment room.
