Your TV may have to be negotiated with via HDMI on each channel change, especially if the cable DVR is set for allowing more than one output resolution mode. With component output there is no 2-way communcation involved.

your output resolutions maybe all highlighted, go to your settings (cable box) look for display or output resolutions and highlight just 1 output whether it be 720p or 1080i (which ever you prefer) just make sure only 1 is highlighted.

But then his resolutions will be screwed up on certain channels.

If he chooses 1080i and watches Fox for example, the box will take Fox's 720p signal and convert it to 1080i, then the TV will take that 1080i and convert it to it's panels native resolution.

Keep 720p and 1080i both selected for best video quality. You don't want a lossy extra step in the conversion process.

What I wouldn't give for a nice SA box. I'm stuck with a Motorola and their crummy one resolution box. I'm constantly changing the resolution manually with the format IR code (00109) programmed to an unused button on my remote.
