Sounds very cool, but I have a hard time going back to R-Type I and II after playing R-Type Final.

in your opinion what makes final so much better? with the updated graphics i think this release will be killer.... dont get me wrong, final was great, but i like the nostalgic aspect of 1 and 2, and switching graphics engines on the fly will be cool.

- To me, the customization and weapons were what made RTF enjoyable to me. I've never been a fan of the weapons in RT1 and RT2.

I'll buy it without question if it's a faithful port.

The demo is pretty fun, I always liked the R-Type games, but I won't be buying it. Switching between 3D and 2D on the fly is nice and all, but all it is is a graphical upgrade. There's a weird looking "crazy" camera angle in 3d which has you going diagonally into the back right, I think that's actually the one that looked nicest, but like I said, not worth $15 to me for a graphically upgraded port... of these games at least. I'm sure there's games I'd pay that for, not this.

I'd say they'll drop this within a week when figure out that no one will buy it at that price. I'll consider the game if it's 800 pts.

I used to have R-Type for my Sega Master System waaaaay back around 1988. It was a fun game and I'll be curious to try the demo, if only for nostalgia. But 1200 points is a really tough sell for an XBLA title.

Is it just me or does MS seem to be trying to push the higher pricepoint for more and more XBLA software lately?

Definitely. Honestly, though, if you think about it... $15 is not a lot of money for some of the games that have been coming out lately, like Castle Crashers or Braid or SSFIITHDR. These are games where last generation would have commanded at least $30 if not $50. They have high replay value and lots of gameplay. Way more than the usual BS $10 DLC pack we have been getting lately (like Fable 2 Knothole Island).

I'd like to see prices go down faster, though.

higherprice point allows for devs to put more money and time into the games. or quicker profits eitehr way it benefits the dev in this model. I'll try the demo tonight.

Doubtful as Xbox owners love to spend money on Live. Maybe in a couple of months

The only game I was happy to pay that much for was Braid. Every other game currently at 1200 points is, to me, a rip-off. I wish MS would figure this out (or I don't know, perhaps enough people are buying at that price point they won't change, but those people are rich, dumb, or both).

Or, you know, they think $15 is a reasonable price for a good game... nah can't be...

I tried the demo and spurred on by a wave of nostalgia I decided to plunk down the 1200 points on impulse and get the whole game.

I'd forgotten how hard the R-Type games are; right from the first level you're inundated with enemies and fire and you really need to memorize patterns and be quick on your feet to get thru. Be aware that the endless mode turns the game into a quickie cakewalk by giving you an endless supply of ships; once you die you even resume right from the same spot. As such, you can get thru both games in about 20 minutes if you go that route.

Graphically, everything is well detailed and the 3D mode looks nice, although its something of a cheat since the isometric view is achieved via a simple black trapezoidal overlay on top of the graphics that gives the illusion of depth. The widescreen mode also doesn't go edge to edge.

Overall, while it is a superior presentation to the the TG16 version offered on the Wii, I still don't think this was quite worth the 1200 points and I'm somewhat sorry I made the investment. The difficulty is either too high or nonexistent (they really should have given us more difficulty settings) and the games are really short when you get right down to it. BTW, there's also a DLC option on the main menu so I wouldn't be surprised if future R-Type games are offered on XBLA as downloadable modules.

They are hard because easy games tie up the arcade machine for a long time with nobody putting money in. That said, the whole credit feed mentality has pretty much destroyed the perception of arcade games. I have read reviews by supposed game experts and fans who have said, Metal Slug is 20 minutes long or Thunderforce Whatever is 30 minutes lol so short right? Go play Lost Odyssey instead!

It's all about the arcade situation these types of games were created for. Every time you played R-Type (or Metal Slug, or whatever) you didn't credit feed but left when you died. But each time you got a little farther. The games get progressively harder, so there's no point in skipping past a guy you can't beat to get to another guy harder than him. You could credit feed but its just wasting money. A game like R-Type or Metal Slug or Ikaruga is designed to be played a few minutes at a time over a long period of time. Getting good enough to beat it on one credit takes a long time.

R-Type is my all time favorite shooter, but for $15 I will pass.

Oh, I wasn't complaining about the difficulty or brevity of the game, just offering a heads up about the potential pitfalls of endless mode and how you can basically see everything in half an hour if you go that route.

I know. Yea these old games were very short, but getting to see all 20-30 minutes properly took dozens if not hundreds of hours. There's honestly no point to playing these games if a person is just going to credit feed.
