Hi, This summer i moved for the first time in my life, giving me my own floor attic bedroom. Technically it would be considered the master, but my mom would rather not climb the stairs, SCORE! It represented me a new opportunity (my old room was a boring 12x18 rectangle). I have an alcove for equiptment, a huge walk in closet and a large bathroom (which we converted from scratch from a second large walk in, i am a boy after all and need a shower more than a closet :) ) I've been in awe of everything i've read through and viewed here, I feel a little disapointed that this is all i have to show, but as a 17 year old, this is what I have:

Equiptment:
Displays
Phillips 42TA648BX (connected to everything!)
HP W2207 (connected to everyday desktop)
Samsung LN22A450 (connected at desk to Media Live in Cabinet)
Mimo UM-740 (my new gadget, been connected to both PCs)

Equiptment in Cabinet:
Onkyo TX-SR606B (My newest addition)
Xbox 360 (via component/ toslink -> Onkyo 606 -> TV)
PS3 (Via HDMI -> Onkyo 606 -> TV)
AppleTV (Via HDMI -> Onkyo 606 -> TV)
HTPC Built around MSI Media Live ((Via HDMI/ 5.1 Analog) -> Onkyo 606 -> TV)
Comcast hd DVR (Via HDMI -> Onkyo 606 -> TV)
Tripp-lite Digital UPS
Modem from Comcast
Apple Time Capsule

Speakers:
Fronts: Mirage Omnisats
Center: Mirage - OSł-CC Ompipolar 3-Way Center
Rears: Model Number escapes me, Small sonys which sound quite nice for rears
Sub: Yamaha yst-sw216

Any comments, suggestions or ideas welcomed!

Load them all into Photobucket and then use the little mountain picture, and put the URLs in there.

Nice setup bud. Made me think back (a long ways back!) to some of my first a/v set ups. One question though, does your head hurt sometimes from having all that equipment in there? :)

Pretty sweet stuff. I am 19 in college still living at home and I just redid my room

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1104482

What everyone told me was to just tidy everything up. It can be a lot of work (if you're like me) It took me 4 days to finish cleaning and setting everything up, but it does make a hell of a difference. Just clean up the tv stand and tidy up the wiring in your "rack"

Sweet stuff though. I am not completely done with mine yet. I should be getting a new computer case (htpc) on wed along with my new subwoofer so some things will be moved. But yeah, all I can really say is clean up.

Another suggestion is maybe to

A. Use the tv stand for your equipment (receiver, 360, ps3 etc) instead of having your 360 on your sub and a printer on your stand. Then you can use your current "rack" as a cabinet to hide all of your wiring tubs/containers.

or

B. Ditch the tv stand, have everything in your rack and wall mount the tv. It free's up A LOT of space. It will be more spacious and cleaner. I am guessing you sit on the computer chair to use the tv which seems pretty close, the tv a foot farther wouldnt hurt imho.

In my case, after wall mounting I think i have too much space. I kind of want to build/buy a shelf or something for under the tv...maybe for dvds or something.

The hardest part about moving things will be finding another place to put them, in my case I just throw all of the stuff I dont need in my brothers closet (you cant even open it anymore)

Hope this helps

Wait until you have a house payment, that is after you have paid off 3 of them. Some will get the drift... If only I could go back a few years ago... I never would have had employees... Miller Lite talking...

Nice room. Enjoy it, and may your future be bright... ;)

Shite happens.

Yea, yours looks nice!

A) The 360 on my sub isn't my 360, the one in the "rack" is. I kinda like having my tubs of wires out, it actually makes me feel like i am organized, whether it is so or not. Also, my equipment is all wired within the walls, with everything nice and hidden in the "rack" and i love it, especially the lack of noise and the IR repeater system. Also the printer is an extra, you cant see it but i actually have a 6 foot L desk with an all in one print/ scanner/ fax, so it just sits there.

B) Wall mounting not an option :(. And i lay in bed and watch probably 90% of the time, my head a good 12 feet from the screen, pretty much the same distance with the chair too.

I 2nd the idea of mounting the tv, it does make thing look better and free up much space.

I would also move the Onkyo up to the top shelf and cut an opening above and have a ran there too. With the Onkyo at the bottom, it's sending tons of hot air up to the other device, even with fans on the side.

I didnt think about that, i might have to think that over, i havent really noticed much heat from the 606, but much more from the HTPC....... The only thing on the top shelf is that with the HTPC i have a pull out spinning shelf....

BTW, fans are on the back of the cabinet

I say again, Mounting the TV is not an option and as you can see from the pic, i cant actually get it any higher because the roofline is right there, with the center above

It really doesnt need to be any higher. If you did want to raise it up a little than just throw the center underneath.

is there any way to reorganize the cables in the rack cabinet?

Bboy_jon
02-04-09, 11:31 AM
Yeah, a few velcro ties or even tape just so they arent all over the place would do wonders.

That's quite the collection of equipment for a 17 year old. If you bought that with money you earned yourself, congratulations.

As to your question, my main suggestion would be to DE-CLUTTER! You've got stuff - equipment, wires, bins, and junk - lying around and pretty much everywhere. Take a look at pretty much any nice looking room you like in magazines or on this sight, and ask yourself how much clutter you see in them. This is your biggest enemy. The good news is it only takes a bit of determination and creativity to solve that problem.

For example, all those plastic bins with cables in them ... gone. Once you're set up, how often do you need to access cables, for crying out loud? Use that valuable shelf space to neatly store some of the crap you've got cluttering up your floor and desk. Maybe even get some simple curtain to hide your shelf area entirely.

Now turn the other way - see that spool of speaker wire, extra monitor and plastic bin and other crap on the other side of your TV. Get it out of there.

Garbage can in the middle of the floor right in front of your TV? Not a great fashion statement.

Get the idea? Good - go for it, lad! You'll be glad you did!

How well does the MIMO UM-740 work? I picked up a UM-710 this week to see how I like it(the 740 models were back ordered). I think I would like to get the touchscreen version too but I'm not sure how I would use the touchscreen features. How does it integrate into Vista? What can I do with the touchscreen. Currently I'm using my 710 model to house all my widgets so I could reclaim that real estate on my 24" monitor.

I think the 740 works pretty well, it integrates into vista one of 2 ways, either it is an extension or a mirror. On extension you can drag windows over and then use touch to interface, on mirror, it is like you use touch as a mouse for where ever you see on the mimo.

Hope that helps!
