View Full Version : Buying Used Samsung?????????
Bob Lindquist 02-02-09, 08:41 PM My first post. Have a chance to buy a like new Samsung 58A650 for 1800.00. Is that a fair price?. Private owner has upgraded to a 63'. Has about 6 mos. left on the warranty. Is the warranty transferable to me? With all the problems I see on this site (with all brands) I kind of like the idea of seeing exactly what I am getting before I buy. I am guessing that most problems, if you are going to have any will be in the first 100 hours? Any down side to buying used other than the warranty issue? Thanks for looking. Bob
daniel'son 02-02-09, 08:45 PM .. only issue i've read is the 'pink' hue or blobs; besides that, most really love the set. Its a relatively good deal but would ask for at least one week trial before you sign over the check. ;)
add: mentioned at Samsung site to have receipt for service.
discopaul 02-02-09, 08:51 PM Though I prefer new, if it looks good and the warranty is transferable, take it. A new one is almost twice that price.
joemama127 02-02-09, 10:03 PM I put plasma tv's in the same category as underwear and computer harddrives when it comes to buying used..;)

+1 :)
AlexInvision 02-02-09, 10:50 PM I usually say buying used TV's is not a good thing but that is a great price. Is there a way for you to look at it before you buy it?

No it's not, not even close.

Same here. But I do use a HDD that was free even though it had tons of hours on it.

Much more or much less?

It is about $600-$700 more. The used price is a great deal.

so , did you get it?
and, what if the first owner didnt do the burn in properly?
If you do burn in now, the proper way, after the original owner had it all this time, is that OK?
or, is the time to do the 100 hour burn in * only * at the beginning of the plasma panels life?
or does it even matter WHEN you do the burn in, just as long as you DO a burn in, sometime during the plasma panels life?
thanks,
al
I never did the burn in on my PN50A650 and have no problems. The idea of the "burn-in" is just to rapidly get some run time on the phosphors as they run hotter when new before they have a chance to settle in, so there is a higher risk of IR and real burn (the bad kind) effecting PQ of the panel. With only 6mo left of the warranty it would be my guess the TV has been on enough that a "burn-in" would have little to no effect in aging the pixels, instead it would only waste away possible viewing time.
But to the OP:
If you can see the TV and there is no burn in or other problems I say go for it, that price is a steal.
xbr3xbr3 02-18-09, 07:22 PM oh, and is there a way to see the number of hours on the panel?
as in somewhere in the menus, to see the "milage" on the panel?
al
It's buried in the service menu somewhere, I never looked into it myself. I consider myslef somewhat tech savy and don't dare go into the menu, I'm sure I could handle it, but if checking hours of the panel is all I'm after I'm smart enough to know better.
The two existing threads for the 550/650 plasmas do have the information in them though.
