View Full Version : 6PG Xtra - HTPC - 720P and HDFury
Hi All,
I have a 6PG extra and HTPC with Radeon x1600xt, and have always ran it at 1024*768 which I know is not bringing out the best potential out of this projector, but it worked for DVD's. Now that I have better computer, I can get something better out of the 6PG. Catalist Control Center does 720p at 60Hz and it looks good on the projector. I would like to install a blue ray drive. I have a simple 3 dollar dvi to rgb adapter, is this HDFury a lot better than a regular adapter? The video card has two DVI out but not HDMI, so it looks like the HDFury would be the way to go. Are there any others with similar setup who would go with this? Or is it not going to make much of a difference?
Also have a 4:3 screen, and would like to know what the best resolution and refresh rate for the 6PG xtra is for 4:3 material.
Thanks

No.
Don't know what to run on a 4:3 screen, but 1080i 71.928hz is best on a 16:9 screen, IMO.
Thanks Mark,
I have not been checking the forums for about 5 years, so may be clueless about the latest and greatest. This adaptor seems interesting, I'd kind of like to see if any other pg xtra folks are using this with their HTPC.
Brooklyn 02-04-09, 08:51 PM The adapter just outputs the analog signal that comes out of your DVI port. DVI ports have pins for both analog and digital, and your video card *probably* does both.
I hooked up the HDFURY - DVI TO BNC(RGB) CONVERTER *GREEN EDITION* (BNC EDITION) to the NEC using a DVI-D cable straight from the DVI port on the Radeon card. The NEC uttered a bunch of squeeks and shows the hard to see squiggle lines, making it hard to see anything, even though I have the same settings, 720P 60Hz.
The HDfury adapter lights up, so that part is working. Figuring that perhaps the CCC is sending the wrong signal to the projector, I updated it to the latest version of CCC. The CCC recognizes the HDfury as a "Digital Panel (DVI) 4" or HDfury DVI in the graphics adapter dropdown list as well as the Panel information screen. I have the regular desktop "extended" to the projector, should it be another setting?
I tried toggled both the DVI settings under attributes "Reduce DVI frequency on high-res displays" on and off, as well as "Alternate DVI operational mode" Both don't seem to make a difference.
My guess would be that the CCC is making an assumption about my display that it is a newer projector, so what can I change in CCC to send the correct signal to the NEC?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Mark_A_W 02-10-09, 01:17 AM Test it on a CRT monitor instead of the Xtra.
Thanks Mark. And yes, Brooklyn, the video card does both dual Analog/Digital DVI out.
Tried that on another system with a CRT monitor, as I don't have a CRT monitor at home any longer. This did not work, (the other issue with the CRT monitor is that the HDfury can't go directly into the monitor as appears to be recommended by the recommendations, it has a stretch of RGB cable coming out of it) no blue led on that Dell DVI feed either, so maybe that radeon card is too weak.
Did try it again at home on the CRT, and finally it did recognize the signal as 720p, so at least I know something is going through the HDfury, but the screen is pretty much black. When I look into the tubes, it looks like a frozen screen capture of TV snow. I fiddled some with the position settings, but all that did was put a horizontal line at the top of the screen (which goes past the image on both sides) which I can't seem to get rid of even after I repower the system. A blanking or phrasing issue? Unless someone knows the workaround, I'll probably have to create a new signal entry again for 720p. I'm waiting for a DVI-D dual link cable as currently I only have a DVI-D single link, who knows maybe that will work better.
Mark_A_W 02-10-09, 11:22 PM Honestly, I don't know why you are bothering.
I tried all this crap and went back to VGA.
VGA works 100%, and the HD-Fury will not look any better.
You may be right, I may just sent it back. However, it is my understanding that in order to play blue ray and get the extra resolution, one has to get past the HDCP encryption, and supposedly only these types of things can do that. How are you watching HiDef content on your CRT?
Mark_A_W 02-11-09, 01:41 AM Eh?
Not from a PC. VGA is permitted. You don't need any form of HDMI/DVI device at all - just use VGA.
But a PC is MUCH better with Anydvd HD ;)
Good advice, Thanks :)
Btw, while not electric, my bike is a hybrid as well, an low polluting bike engine that can be engaged on hills and completely disengaged when not needed with a kevlar belt. 350 miles per purchased gallon.
