View Full Version : PS3 Newbie.
Poolshark69 02-03-09, 10:26 AM So I just got a 60gb PS3 given to me. It came with a few games: Madden 07, Kane and Lynch, GTAIV and CoD5. I am new to the PS world and wondering what I should be getting.
Here is my setup:
Pioneer 5080HD
Yamaha RX-V1500
I am pretty sure i have the settings correct for the best picture and sound with my older HT system. I have 2 BD's 300 and I am legend . I will be watching those this weekend. I know it says 1080p 36bit when I played 5 monites of 300 the other night.
Now for gaming I purchased Resistance Fall of Man and was mildy impressed even though I am finding it hard to get used to the controller. The graphics are fair and the gameplay seems to be ok. Should I pick up Resistance 2? I am interested in Uncharted:Drakes Fortune. I am not a sport game player or a racer. Mostly adventure and FPS and 3rd Person shooters.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know gaming is a personal thing but having advice form other gamers is always helpful for me when making purchases.
PS I have setup PS3 Media Server on my Mac and streamed a few files but I found the interface on the PS3 fairly cumbersome. I wish it had some sort of thumbnail system unless i ma missing something. This is for Videos and Music.
Thanks
MaxDam77 02-03-09, 10:33 AM FPS: The upcoming Killzone 2, Bioshock
Adventure games: Drake's Fortune, Metal Gear Solid 4, Dead Space,..
rjsanc30 02-03-09, 10:55 AM ^^^Your lucky to be entering the PS world now, what with Killzone 2 just over 20 days away.
Here's a small list of games I'd recommend (based on your criteria):
FPS -
Call of Duty 4, Far Cry 2, BioShock, Call of Duty: World at War, Resistance 2, Battlefield: Bad Company, FEAR 2 (2/10/09)
Action/Adventure/Other -
Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Dead Space, Soul Caliber IV, Warhawk
There are plenty of great titles to try and this list is by no means complete. However once February 27th rolls around the rest of these titles may become coasters anyway...man I can not wait for KZ2!!!
number1laing 02-03-09, 10:58 AM I'd skip Resistance 2 and just go straight to Killzone 2. Not that R2 is a bad game, KZ2 is the most advanced game on either console by now, so there's great eye candy, gameplay should be pretty good as well. MaxDam77 also has a good recommendation in Dead Space.
Some other games worth checking out: Orange Box, Far Cry 2, Saints Row 2. All 3 are excellent but it depends on what you are interested in.
maximuslcd 02-03-09, 11:02 AM Well resistance 2 is a great game with solid multiplayer online, but Killzone 2 is so close? that is your call..
Fallout 3
drakes
any COD game is a good one
Poolshark69 02-03-09, 12:13 PM Is Resistance 2 much better than 1? I know it was a launch game so i wasn't going in expecting much but I am very underwhelmed so far.
I do appreciate the advice so far.
TedSeattle 02-03-09, 08:07 PM You may already know this, but you can sign up for the Playstation Network for free and then download demos for a variety of games, so you can try before you buy.
Also, I highly recommend Little Big Planet. It's not a shooter or adventure game, but it's a unique game that really sets the PS3 apart from other consoles.
Poolshark69 02-04-09, 07:51 AM Yep I did sign up for the PSN as u can see in my signature. I didn't see a demo for Uncharted. So I started downloading the Alone in the Dark demo I think...1.5gbs.
I will check out some more demo's.

Resistance 2 is better than Resistance 1... hardcore R1 fans don't like R2 very much because the mechanics are very different, however.
Poolshark69 02-04-09, 09:41 AM Would the mechanics be better to a person who has played a good amount of FPS? I find R1 kind of stagnant.
number1laing 02-04-09, 09:43 AM Yea, R1 was a low-rent Halo clone IMO... R2 is a bit more interesting... and it has a cool co-op mode.

It's been a while since I played RFoM, but I don't recall R2 being significantly different from R1 in terms of gameplay mechanics; maybe it feels a little 'looser', and you can throw away the differences between humans and chimera, but aiming and such feels the same to me. What surrounds it is completely different though. It's more colorful, nowhere near as gritty, and the sci-fi slider has been cranked way up.
To use a really awful (and perhaps forum inappropriate) comparison, R1 would be like Gears of War with its relatively small, controlled multiplayer and overall weathered, serious seting, while R2 would be like Halo with its 'out there' sci-fi setting and chaotic, 'i'm surrounded by dozens of players' multiplayer.
