I have been asked by my father to furnish his dedicated "tv room" at his just built cottage with a surround sound theatre setup...the gear only needs to be mid range stuff where as if the family wants to watch a movie they can do so. The room is 16' x 30' and will have tiered seating with a couch and an elevated seating area behind couch...what are your suggestions?

Display: ? (looking for over 50", not intersted in overhead projector...was thinking a decent 58" plasma may work best)
Blu ray: I was thinking a PS3 (most versitile for the kids and to watch dvd's or blu rays)
A/V reciever: ? (looking to spend no more than $1500)
Speakers: ?
Sub: ?

You might do better to do some research in the individual equipment forums. Especially the display, as this is an HT forum, and we mostly concentrate on projectors (not that most of us might not have LCDs or Plasmas as well). As for my .02, I don't know that I'd go PS3 for your Dad (unless games are important, and not just an afterthought); maybe more like a bang-for-the-buck standalone like the Sony BDP-S350 or 550. As far as AVRs go, you can't go wrong in the mid-fi with Denon or Onkyo. With a $1500 budget you could get an Onkyo TX-SR876, which has HQV Reon-VX video processing; nice. Of course there are other good choices. Speakers, IMO, Paradigm and Klipsch are solid choices in the mid-fi category; Paradigm maybe a little more balanced between music and HT, Klipsch gives you a lot of HT boom for the buck.

Can't offer up much in the way of a sub recommendation; I have a JL Audio and haven't looked around lately.

Hope that helps and good luck,
CD
