Hoping that someone can clarify this for me.
I have a PS3 since 5 months now.
The latest upgrade is installed which is now 2.6x (don't remember the last digit)
Here is my problem
When I try to play some MPEG4 stuff such as DIVX and in particular some XVID video files, I have at least 1 out of 5 files that don't work. Either the sound comes out as a high pitch noise or what is more frequent, the PS3 reports back with "Unsupported Data"......... @#%$@#$%
Have other people experience the similar problems?

I play divx and xvid files on my PS3 all the time and I have never had any of them fail.

I have the "Unsupported Data" error on about the same frequency... i fixed the audio issue by installing AC3filter and disabling AC# support in FFMpeg.

My mileage is pretty bad with the PS3's DIVX support. With fansubs in particular, I find that only something like 30% will actually play (of course all work fine on my PC). I have basically given up using the PS3 as a media box since it is too unforgiving in what it will accept and offers no useful explanation for why it won't play a given file.
If they would at least spit out meaningful error messages I might be moved to re-encode files but as it is, you have no idea what the problem is so cannot reliably fix it.

I gave up and bought a Popcorn Hour.

Using smplayer (http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/) on the PC connected to my TV is far-and-away a better media center than anything the PS3 can offer. The only missing item for me at the moment is a digital audio card.

Haven't come across a scenerip that hasn't worked.
I usually always get the "unsupported data". Only about 30% of all DivX/Xvid I try work.
On the flip side, my 360 churns out the same files without a problem.

Could it possibly be the quality of the videos you guys are watching? It's weird that I have never had a problem with mine...
Nox: Problem with the 360 for me is the fact that when I play xvid/divx through it, I only get analog sound (same with their Netflix service). When I play the same xvid/divx through the PS3, I get 5.1, even though it's probably not native 5.1. The PS3 or my receiver simulates 5.1 which makes all the difference in the world to me, while the 360 does not.

It's probably the codec used when encoding the video files. I get them occasionally, but it's in the .02% for me because I watch tonnes of DivX/XviD files on a weekly basis.

That's exactly what I'm thinking it is!

1) Are you streaming or burning cds
2) if your burning cds any additional files on there
