View Full Version : How am I able to play online games without being connected online?

This is the damnest thing I've ever seen. For some odd reason, I decided to see if I could connect to the PS store without using my sister's wireless internet. Sure enough, I could. Then I thought I would try to download the RE5 demo. Yup. NOTHING connected to my PS3 to go online. Nothing, and the download speed was FAST. Was finished in about 10 minutes.

So then I popped in FarCry 2. I clicked on multiplayer and there it was. I was able to cycle through the maps. I chose a map and to my amazement, I was playing an online match!

How is this possible? Like I said, I have no internet peripheral connected to my PS3.

Maybe you have a special Hero "ability"? See if it works for someone else preferably not a family member.

yeah, you're probably picking up a neighbor's signal.

i'd like to add that if you come across a family member you haven't seen in a while, DO NOT HUG THEM.

So is that good or bad? Is this just a temporary thing?

it is probably a weak signal from the neighbors.... and yes it is stealing..

Actually, I wish I could change my name to Jason Bourne. He's the best action hero ever. Best movie trilogy ever, and Matt Damon is hot!

OT, I hope this free internetz lasts like, um, er, FOREVER!

Depending on your location and ISP, It could be the free wifi that the ISP's are rolling out. My neighborhood is lucky enough to have the Optimum wifi available, even though the signal isn't strong enough for gaming in my exact location.

Free? Really? How would I know? I live in Florida. My sister uses AT&T wireless and for the living we use Road Runner light.

"For the living?" This thread is getting stranger and stranger. Is your sister the undead? I didn't realize AT&T offered service to the afterlife.

I think I've figured it out. Your sister's house wasn't built on an ancient indian burial ground, was it?

Take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

think he forgot "room" in that statement.

Not so sure. If it's open and not protected, then I wouldn't say it is. If you're actively breaking through encryption, then sure it is.

Ya think? You mean he wasn't really talking about different internets for living and dead relatives?

Seems obvious to me that Cloe is hooking you up via satellite no doubt. I'm not so sure about the undead though.

Also, I can't tell if Eddy is joking.

You better quit stealing your neighbor's internet. I heard his name is Colonel Dubaku and he doesn't like to be disturbed.

Stealing wifi? Please. If your neighbor isn't protecting his signal, he's giving it away. If he turns up his sprinkler so the water hits your lawn, are you stealing?

Agreed.

No matter how you rationalize it, using your neighbor's wifi w/o asking IS stealing.

It's like he left a 20 dollar bill on his doorstep. The noble thing to do would be to knock on his door and educate him on things like wallets.

In this case a wallet would be a wep key.

Bollocks. It's like finding a $20 bill on your door step and keeping it for yourself. I happily run my wifi open and anyone in my neighborhood is welcome to it without asking.

If you want to limit access, protect your wifi, otherwise it's fair to assume it's free to access.

Ok maybe it's more like you saw drop the $20 bill and gust of wind blew it over to your door :p

In some cities (US) it's actually illegal to have an unencrypted network. I know this because I work for FiOS and that's why our routers firmware has encryption key set as default.

Web forum morality lessons... almost as funny as 'opening sockets' and CIP device references; But not quite.

BTW... if your neighbors water falls on your lawn it's you obligation under the 'Federation of Neighborly Duties Act' to return the water the the police. If after 60 days the neighbor does not claim the water it is yours to keep.. provided you pay all Federal, State and applicable local taxes on on it.

Give me a break Flanders..

I look at it more like a fruit tree that's hanging over his fence into my yard. I can legally take what fruit is on my side. I can also trim it away from the fence on my side. I can't grab a branch and try to pull more tree over to get more fruit.
