Small basement that needs all the space it can offer. Currently have 2x2's on the outside basement walls without insulation. My plans are to rip everything down and put 1-2 inch foam and then frame walls with the 2x2's and stuff as much unfaced insulation I can get in there.
Just wondering if anyone else has used 2x2's and if it's warm enough. Gets awful cold in Cleveland in the winter!
Am I better off with 2x4's and sacrificing the space?

Personally I would go with a 2x4 or even 2x6 wall. Stuffing insulation in there is a bad idea and the more compact insulation is the worse it works. You want to gently put it in the cavity. If you were in Hawaii or something though a 2x2 wall would probably suffice.

Seconded, the air space between the insulation is what does the job...stuffing it will degrade performance drastically.
2x4 at least...
Really didn't mean "stuff" the insulation. Meant getting whatever R-value I could into that space.
The more I think about it I may just go: 1" foam then 2x4 framing and then batt insulation.
Just trying to save as much space as possible with a small basement. Trying to plan screen size, projector placement and rack placement.

My basement has 2x2's and I regret not replacing them with 2x4's when I remodeled.

I wouldn't think 2 x 2s would allow enough room for electrical work or plumbing to run inside the wall. That's a pretty shallow space.
Would 4" (2 x 2 on opposite walls) provide that much positive floor space versus the negative aspects of a shallow wall cavity?
Right now I have a 2x2 against block wall. If I put 1" foam and then a 2x4 I'm out to 4 1/2 inches without the drywall. So I guess I'd be losing 2 1/2".
I'd agree that it would be easier to wire plus the added insulation would probably outweigh the couple inches I would lose. I was just trying to gain space to put my screen, furniture, projector, etc. in a very small space.

There are a lot of people here with amazing skills. Create a layout of your room with dimensions and see what people can come up with to help you out. Include what you want to accomplish, door location, window locations, any obstructions and see what's possible.

Thanks, I'm way ahead of you :) I'm struggling slightly with sketchup but should have some plans up shortly. By the looks of a lot of these rooms, you are truly right about the "amazing" people.
One of my biggest concerns is where to put an equipment rack. Once that is decided I can at least finalize my plans and begin.
I have a closet that is 2' deep. Do you think this will accomodate a rack and will I be able to get to the cables from behind. Can't afford a pull out rack!
