What program do you recommend for drawing floor plans acceptable for permits? I'm not looking for a professional program like AutoCAD just something simple learn (and hopefully free) to draw lines and label them with dimensions. I'm ruling out MS Paint because it is a pixel paint program and does not scaling. I've just installed SketchUP! and it's great to see your ideas in 3D view, but I don't think it will pass for permit requirements. Any suggestions?

Really? I mean, Sketchup is pretty much Revit light. The next step up would be something a good deal more complex. Maybe you could do a sample drawing, take it downtown and get an idea about whether it'll work or not.
