OK, OK...I know this is the lamest kind of I'm not a big boy, I can't decide for myself and just do it kind of posting, but...

...the building of my room is just about finished, and these are the major steps that I feel like I have left (keeping in mind I plan to do certain things, like acoustic panels or the such, as like phase II, after the theater is operational).

-build a shadowboxing build-out and riser
-prime and paint (I should do before carpet)
-install side and rear in-walls (I figure I should do after painting, but before carpet?)
-carpet
-build built-in cabinet for equipment (I'm doing a built-in under the screen for equiment, and I figure that should go on top of carpet?)
-hang pj and screen

OK, here goes: would you say I have my to-do list in the right order? :o

I'd build the cabinet and then carpet. Why pay to cover that part of the floor?

That's true. I guess my thinking is the cabinet would not look quite as seamlessly built-in if the carpet didn't flush up perfectly to it. Whereas it has no choice if I build it on top of the carpet. Something (else) to think about I guess.

Thanks Cathan,

Yeah, but your carpet installer would make it seamless anyway. And god forbid you have to rip up the carpet, you would need to rip out the cabinet too.

would take care of cabinet before carpet too. also, if you're doing any trim like floor molding (and your door casing, etc.), go ahead take care of the priming and painting of that before cutting/installing. a lot faster to set up on horses and bang out at once (but will still need to fill the little nail holes and touch up after install and maybe even caulk any gaps against your walls).

OK, sold. I really prefer to save the carpet (and the cost) until toward the end anyway. Speaking of carpet...rather than start a new thread...I suck at visualizing what it'll look like in a room. They make virtual simulators for everything else now...here's how your furniture will look in a room, here's how paint will look on the walls...anyone know of a virtual carpet option?

we usually "check out" several samples from home depot, take home for a few days and place in the area in question, and make a decision that way. the samples are 2 ft by 2 ft or so (big enough to actually get an idea) and don't cost anything (if you return)....really, i'm fortunate in this area as my better half has an eye for colors, style, etc. so maybe she's the virtual carpet program

Yeah, thanks Pilgram; I've looked there, of course. Like I said, I'm imagination challenged...and a bit OCD to boot; I can see examples I like very much, but have a hard time deciding if they'd look just right in my room...and to that end, of course I want to make the absolute perfect choice.

I usually follow hmmm's advice, and have the little woman reign me in.

you'd think there would be something for carpeting like what Benjamin Moore has for painting. i just remembered having seen this before. apparently you can upload a photo and use a wizard to paint the different surfaces:

Upload a sideways picture of your room and test out different colors with the paint tool?

In my opinion gray is almost always the answer.

OK, so I'm looking to build the riser this weekend and I just went upstairs and measured and I'm in a little bit of a panic. I'm one of the big ones to tout the whole 1.2 - 1.5 rule, for 1080p. However, for now (and I don't know when the upgrade will come) I'm rockin' 720p and some SDE, so I like to stay in the 1.8 range.

My room is 18' long, and for the months of the construction I've always had a 6' riser, and the first row at 12' in my head. But when I went up to take the measurements, sure enough...it just didn't feel right; 12' felt too close.

I'm only going to manage a 96" 2.35 screen (I know, weep for me :(), so at 88" wide, x 1.8...sure enough, ~13'; which, interestingly enough, is what looks about right to me.

I know 6' is pretty much minimum for recliners; or is that for recliners in both rows to be laid out? If I understand that every seat in the house may not be able to get horizontal, has anyone successfully gone as short as 5' for a riser? I need a quickie on this; meeting the GC at the HD in the AM.

Thanks,

Big suggested 6'8" as a minimum for the riser when I posted this same question ... I think you should go over to the 2.35 forum and check on those seating distances ... you can likely sit alot closer than you think and if not then let another family member sit in the front row and you sit in the back row if you are more comfortable farther away from the screen

I have a 136" 2.37:1 screen and I have tested it at 10' 11' 12' and I am fine at all distances YMMV

Thanks for trying Scruffy; obviously the answer I wanted to hear was "I have a 5' riser, and as long as you realize what you're giving up, you should be fine"...lol. I'm sure you and Big are correct. As for your 136" at 10' I'm sure that must be a 1080p rig?

My VPL-AW15 is 720p, and with some SDE to boot, so I'm fine back a ways from the screen (I know to de-focus is another solution). Besides, once I started thinking about a back row with non-reclining chairs, I kind of got used to or even liked the idea. This is just a 1a room, full of compromises that couldn't be helped; I can live with one more.

Thanks again,
