I'm starting to look at ways to minimize sound transmission up to the first floor for an upcoming basement finish. Code here requires floating walls in the basement due to expansive soils. Can RSIC clips support the weight of a floating wall? Most times these walls "float" with the gap at the bottom edge. Can one decouple the walls from the ceiling joists by placing the gap at the top of the wall?

RSIC-1 clips and WhisperClips can both support the weight of a floating wall. It can even support the weight of two sheets 5/8" drywall if space 24" on center, or 3 sheets when spaced 16" on center. Check acousticalsurfaces dot com for RISC-1 clips, of soundproofingcompany for the WhisperClips.

Those clips aren't what you're looking for. Not for suspending the whole wall.

Yes, it sounded as if it would be a huge amount of weight to actually hang. I'm going to see if the local code will allow the wall to float at the top. This method does get used for basement walls containing plumbing and seems as if it should largely decouple the wall from the joists.

I'm looking at some partially decoupled hanging clip systems for you.

I am getting ready for a theater build in my basement and I have the same issue. pumori ... did you ever do this and if so how?
