View Full Version : Qualia 004 Sales Idea
Ash Sharma 02-05-09, 02:55 PM On of my friends has offered to buy my Qualia 004 with 500 hours on the bulb (This is my second bulb) ... The 004 has a long throw lens and a I have a medium throw lens in a box.
The friend trusts me and has asked me to name a price I could sell it to him.
I want to be fair... would appreciate a idea of price I should charge him... I would like to give him a great deal.
Thanks in advance.
Ash
J.Mike Ferrara 02-05-09, 03:03 PM Ash,
The 004 is one of the brightest 1080p projectors around. If that's what your friend needs, then he should be willing to pay a fair price. What that is is hard to say, because frankly, the current Sonys/JVCs have better performance in other key areas.
Ash Sharma 02-05-09, 03:14 PM Mike,
I agree with you... but he does not have a very big screen and I know that the new cheaper JVC and Sony LCOS projectors will be great in his situation.
So If I do sell him a Qualia it should be at a very good price...
Ash
J.Mike Ferrara 02-05-09, 03:56 PM Ash, the 004 is a 'classic' - stunning looks and build quality that is not touched by any other >$20,000 projector. My 004 is the most reliable video device I've ever had. What that's worth is in the eye of the beholder.
Ash start with Videogon for a base price :)
http://videogon.com/
thebland 02-05-09, 10:02 PM I think $5K is a good price.
Ash Sharma 02-05-09, 10:33 PM Thanks.... this is good guidance, I will seek 5000.
Will Sony ever replace that unit or is Qualia pretty much dead?? SJ
J.Mike Ferrara 02-06-09, 07:13 AM Will Sony ever replace that unit or is Qualia pretty much dead?? SJI think the state of the economy will decide. There was supposed to be a 4K Sony that would use the 004 chassis due this year.

"this year"?
since 3 cedia shows i hear this and nothing happen.
for sure the source that say this since almost 3 years is not very reliable.
but some day he is may right depends on how long you wait:)
may also possible that sony will stop lcos if they cant sale more pr.
they need a big improvment NOW.
arround 5k seams to be a fair price for the qualia.
Ash Sharma 02-06-09, 03:12 PM I do not believe Sony will come out with a replacement any time soon.
Even people at Sony do not know if there will be a Qualia replacement.
OK - I will give the projector to my friend for 4K....
It's hard to believe that the Qualia is valued so low now. It seems like yesterday when I bought a VW50 after dreaming about the Qualia demoed in Vegas. What a piece of art. It reminds me of when I see G90s going for $4-5k. On the other hand, when you look at the performance of current sub $10k projectors (specifically their on/off CR) the "older" digitals show their age. But $5k??
Ash,
If its a friend I would say it's not necessarily the price. I would make sure you offer the disclaimer of what this projector really is. (Edsel :)) just kidding.
Seriously though, for the same price and substantially less operating costs you can get a new warranted projector that crushes the Qualia in all areas except brightness. This should be disclosed.
Then if he wants a historic piece, I wouldn't price it over $5k.
No one has mentioned lamp replacement costs, which I believe are still streeting just over $2K.
Jim
donaldk 02-12-09, 06:02 PM Jim, I thought of posting the suggestion of a dollar per hour, with 500 hours left on the bulb...
darinp2 02-12-09, 07:16 PM Seriously though, for the same price and substantially less operating costs you can get a new warranted projector that crushes the Qualia in all areas except brightness. If you are referring to something like the RS20, I'm not sure it would even match the Qualia 004 for sharpness. But it has been a while since I saw the Qualia and would need to see it or have somebody trustworthy check the sharpness differences between them.

Ash Sharma 02-12-09, 08:08 PM So, If I sell the Qualia to my friend at 4k, I would tell him that the bulb would last him 1500 hours after which it will be a boat anchor.... as a new bulb will cast him 4k!
Maybe I should just trade it with the dream green putting system he has and never uses....
That would be fair.

To get to the short of it, you can get Qualia replacement bulbs for around $330 off of ebay. Do a search for user 'Xenoarc'. This is not the housing, but just the bulb. Buy an extra bulb for him and throw it in the sale.
If you have not received the 'free' bulb replacement from Sony, get in touch with your dealer or give Sony a call to receive it. I went through my dealer and got the free bulb.
Just some thoughts...
Nick Satullo 02-12-09, 09:50 PM Some Qualia 004 units have sold for just over $6000 on eBay. I know, because I bought one.
I returned to the Qualia. The Qualia needs to be tweaked to reach acceptable contrast levels, and, even then, it lags behind much cheaper projectors.
But the Qualia is sharper and brighter than any other projector I've seen, and it throws such a lush picture that I'm content to leave video alone for a long time.

Ash Sharma 02-12-09, 10:10 PM Nick,
You got to see the Sim Lumis, you will change your mind....
Ash
Jason Turk 02-13-09, 11:05 AM It's really a shame that they only get in the $5kish range. It really is a great projector in many aspects. But, then with all the newest stuff I do indeed understand why...

So long as you keep the housing, you can send it out for a replacement bulb for $750. They will dissassemble the housing, put the bulb in, and reassemble. The bulb is the identical one used by Sony.
Thanks,

I don't recall, but if so it sounds like a person could get a backup bulb without any downtime by sending in the original bulb with housing. That projector could still be a nice option for some people with better bulb replacement cost than most figured they would be.
Honestly Tryg, the Qualia could be a good option for your setup if it had the right lens throw for you. Open the iris up for close to 2000 lumens (when the bulb is new) and fight any light coming in.

Yes, the backup bulb was the same as the one included from the factory: Ready to insert, with the housing.
Absolutely correct that you can do it the way you've suggested without downtime.

Perfectionist2 02-20-09, 09:19 PM Sharp, bright, and a wonderful "film-like" image. Plus, at least for me, Sony has provided spectacular support.

Who replaces the bulb into the original housing?

Dennis Erskine 02-28-09, 09:24 AM WSJ on Friday ... with new management (and reporting a loss), I'm not expecting Sony to be on the bleeding edge of anything for some time.
thebland 02-28-09, 03:26 PM Too bad...
noah katz 02-28-09, 03:40 PM Ash,
Maybe you would both do better if he got a new pj and you sold the Qualia on videogon or ebay.
Personally, I prefer not to sell things to friends to avoid possible hard feelings if there's trouble with it later.
Barry Allen 02-28-09, 03:44 PM I second Noah's comment especially given the amount involved.
FrantzM 02-28-09, 05:02 PM Hi
At the risk of appearing completely out of touch:What is the incidence of The Qualia low ANSI on picture quality? To stay On-Topic Noah advice is golden...

Not just Sony - R&D / innovation is going to be under pressure industry-wide. Lots of companies are going to go bust, and most of the rest are going to cut back on new product development. The only good thing about the recession, from a user's point of view, might be the opportunity to pick up products at more favorable discounts.
Perfectionist2 03-01-09, 10:34 AM Assuming the company stays in business and is able to provide support. Hate to buy a $10K+ piece of equipment and find out the company is out of business 3 months later.
Dennis Erskine 03-01-09, 02:02 PM I doubt that will be the case from the manufacturers. They can go upside down just as fast, if not faster, by selling inventory under cost than by keeping it in the warehouse. If there is a Chapter 11 (or international equivalent), that's a different story.

Hey Ben,
This user is no longer on Ebay.. I found a few others, but more in the $900 range.. Any other thoughts or suggestions? can anyone recommend a reliable overseas dealer? Thanks in advance..
