Jeff,
I envy you...saw the SOLO and was blown away...let us know how you like it after you've spent some time with it.

Although admittedly resistant to 3D (but I do have the Panny 65" VT series 3D, that was a gift), I have to say I finally had the opportunity to spend some time with a Solo and was actually surprised at how good it looked. More surprising to me was the excellent 2D performance. (Disclosure: Sim2 dealer)

Jim,

It almost sounds like you are saying the SOLO looked better than the many Lumis projectors you've see. If so, what parts of the 2D PQ lookded better. What SOLO hardware/software changes do you attribute the better PQ?

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, look for a PM. (Not sales related, contact AVS for sales.)

Triple flash sounds good, but I assume their DI can't keep up? What's the native CR?

Why do 3 chip DLPs cost so much like the Sim2 Lumis 3D-Solo? Do people get good deals when they buy from dealers so they don't pay full retail?

Just curious.

Sim2 is just expensive no matter how you slice it. I still like it though.

I really like 3D in theaters [especially IMAX] but I don't have much use for it in the home environment. Of course that could change over time.

Many products can be negotiated some pricewise. If you're serious, check with your dealer, including AV Science sales, and find out!

Well, they have to give you something for the high cost of the projector. Actually, I think they spent a lot in R & D to develop this unit. They are the only ones using the triple flash technology in a consumer unit. Apparently, it was not easy to get all of these features integrated together.

J

DP Titan Reference 3D is also Triple Flash. They added that ability last summer.

Well, I got my new projector installed and watched a few movies over the weekend. The brightness is noticely improved over the C3X1080 and works out well with my 11.5 ' screen. The black level is also improved and the depth of the image is great. The fan noise is similar to the C3X.

The 3D is excellent. Although the light reaching the eyes is quite diminished by the glasses, it is still enough to give a good 3D experience. The units are now shipping with the Sim2 version of the Xpand glasses. I tried a pair of the Xpands, but could not get them to work. They must use a different IR emitter or coding. Anyway, I guess I'll have to buy some more Sim2 glasses.

I found the service menu code is different from the C3X. Could someone please PM the Lumis code? I would like to test the convergence. Thanks

Hi Jeff, congrats on the new projector!

I'm curious, if or when you get around to it, to hear what you think about your Solo's PureMotion in 2D and in 3D. Isn't this Sim2's take on creative frame interpolation (CFI)?

Thanks,
Paul

I thought Puremotion was turned off when in 3D mode?

Jeff,
how loud would you say the lumis is? I have not heard the C3X or lumis. Do you know how many FL you are able to get on your screen calibrated?

Thanks

David,

You might be thinking about a different projector.

The Sim2 website lists PureMotion 3D as a feature of the Solo. In fact, after looking at the User Guide note at the bottom of page 25, I think it's interesting that PureMotion 3D is automatically activated when viewing 3D content. That makes me wonder if it can be turned off if one doesn't like the effect.

I will measure the dB when I get a chance. I have the projector directly in my theater about 5 feet behind and above my head. I don't really notice the noise. I get a lot more noise from the NAS device in my rack when watching old archived DVDs. I should move that to another room!

Supposedly the Puremotion is activated with 3D. All I know is that it looks great. I don't notice any motion issues. DLP is great for 3D because of the short latency time, allowing the higher refresh rate (triple flash). I will have to play with the puremotion setting in 2D with some sports broadcasts, and see what difference it makes.

I just bought a Solo today, should be arriving in a week or so. I'm hoping the difference in resolution and contrast between the Lumis and my Infocus 333 will be enough to stop my wife from killing me. When the projector arrives and get's installed I will post some pictures and impressions between the two projectors.

I'll send it to you. I think I have your email somewhere. I lost my network control at one point - just reloadiing the firmware restored it (acts like a reset).

Tell me, does it erase settings or maintains my ISF settings, input names, etc?

Thanks again!

Loading firmware does not change any settings. Seems to act like a reset otherwise if the projector seems to be acting funky.

thx a lot, worked for me ;-)

do anybody know, if firmware update changes the behaviour of dynamic black - when I use it, I sometimes can see some artefacts and changes in brightness (too easily). firmware is 4.01.30F

have a nice day!

M(c) it looks like you may want to revert to an older FW version and see if that is the cause or not... unless someone rec's something better I think that is a good first step to troubleshoot.

If anyone is interested, I'm selling my Lumis bought from Jason at AVSciene a little over a year ago. The unit is in perfect condition with less than 300 hours on the original bulb. I have the original box and everything. I'm also selling my ISCO III bought at the same time.

Reason: Moving and don't have the space anymore.
Price: Send PM - You won't be disappointed.

Best,

Carlos

Did you sell it already?

Lamp life is more a function of the number of times it is turned on and off than on the hours it shows on the meter. Good ventilation a cooling is another determining factor. Some people may get a thousand hours or less out of a lamp, while others can get 3K or more. If it is bright enough for you, keep using it. When it comes time to replace the lamp, the dealer that sold you the projector can order the replacement from SIM2.

Hi everyone. Has anyone had any trouble installing new firmware? I was having some problem with 3D movies: the 3D image would not project, just a white screen. I called Sim2 and Fausto sent me the latest firmware for my Solo 3D: 5.00.41. (I was using 5.00.28).

When I tried to install it, the first part, the downloader, installed in a few seconds. Then the appcode.hex file tried to install. It would only do 6%, then stopped. Nothing happened for 30 minutes. I finally cancelled out. Now I am not able to start the projector. The power turns on inside, but the light does not come on or the cooling fans. I just hear a faint fan inside, probably on the circuit board. I've tried it multiple times with the same outcome. Sometimes less than 6% installs.

I have to wait until Monday to call Sim2. Hopefully, they can tell me what to do so I don't have to send them the projector. There are a couple of other functions the installer screen: "Verify" and "erase," but I didn't want to try them. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jeff

I got the FW to download. The problem was with the Serial-to-USB converter. I tried two without any luck. Finally, I hooked up my old PC with a serial port, and it downloaded just fine.

Help with my Lumis. What might cause my screen to be VERy dark? I was watching Harry Potter last night and the screen was so dark that we could no longer watch it. When I change aspect ratios, it would go back to normal , but only for a second and then it would return to being very dark. Any toughts on what might cause this would be appreciated. It does this on DVD'd and normal TV.

How many hours are on your bulb? I had an issue with one of the bulbs. As it aged it started to droop and most of the light was missing the lens.

If I were looking at a used one its price would depend first of all on age (lamp hours), and how well it is converged. Values plummet on big ticket items like these due to lack of warranty and other causes. Price will depend on buyer of course but I'd expect below 50% of original price (not necessarily MSRP) typical, depending on details, and history. Because these are sold regularly heavily discounted new, you have to compare street prices of a new unit and work down from there. If I were buying Steve's (and not his imposter LOL), or Rivercitylad's where I know the person and the history, it would bring a much better price than from a stranger on Audio/Videogon where I know nothing about the unit, how it may have been cared for, etc. Or if I were buying one perfectly converged and freshly serviced at Sim2, that would be a very good one for example.

Short answer, it depends :). And Steve, I'll give $2k for yours if it helps ;).

That said, I'd take a used C3X over some alternatives. But I love 3 chip DLP :).

Booaaaa, sorry to hear about your issue. The recommended course would be to reinstall your firmware with the latest version if you are saying that the puremovie option is not coming up or selectable in the menu. If it is not the software potentially having become corrupted, then the other possibility is that your dynamic black arm which is mechanical may have stopped functioning properly and needs to be repaired or replaced. These italian beauties are true stallions of performance but like their automotive counterparts some of the units can be a little moody and need some love and attention from time to time. The good news is that Sim2 stands behind their machines and will make sure that your unit is right, so don't sweat it although I know from ownership experience with many many Sim2 units dating back to 1998 that it can be agonizing to not have your unit tip top until the service folks work their magic.

I am also BTW hearing from several parties who have eyes on and compared A/B that the Sim2 Lumis units are crushing the new VW1000 4k from Sony in head to head comparisons in quite a few areas including ANSI and MTF. Folks who thought the Sony would be an improvement are walking away mightily disappointed. Apparently, like cameras, pixel count alone is not everything by a long shot. You still have lens quality, sensor quality, etc etc. Also many reports are that SXRD is not nearly as durable as the DLP tech. I have heard of a number of issues with the VW1000 right out of the box as well as SXRD units that have been in the field for some time. Sim2 in my mind is still the optimal platform for HT in the here and now and has bottom line performance more than worthy of the infrequent or rare issues that do come up from time to time. Fanboy, yes, but I've owned a large number of the Sony's and JVC's as well and always come back to Sim2.

Tx for the quick attention owl1. Is puremovie function that important? And is DB that great? I cant seem to part with the lumis hahaha. Finally can anyone give me access to the latest firmwares and uploaders cos support in my place is rather limited. The last time we tried to upgrade, it wasnt successful and i had to do the downgrade myself. I believe sim2 has different techs and quality parts hence the premium in price. So its not totally comparable to the sony and jvc. Once again thanks for the input owl1 and i am hoping its just a software problem.
