View Full Version : Buy SVS Sub, Return Paradigm?
shawnwalters 02-05-09, 09:15 PM Last week I bought a paradigm ultracube 10 to go with my studio 40's. I chose the ultracube because it was small (WAF) and had tight sounding bass. This week I decided to change methods for my HT build and do a AT Screen with speakers and sub behind the screen. I was originally going to do the sub in the back of the room because that's where I prewired it.
Anyway, now that we tore out the old front wall, I was able to get a sub cable wired to the front. So now that the WAF isn't going to be an issue since the sub is behind the screen, should I return the ultracube 10 and get an SVS sub? It seems everyone loves them and no one likes the cube.
Another option would be to keep the ultracube in the back of the room and buy a SVS for the front, or would it be better just to have the one sub? Or just keep the ultracube? :)
I just read the thread about providing info, here's my info: My room is 19x14x9 and is a dedicated HT - 95% movies, 5% music. Budget is say $1500 and under.
Thanks,
Shawn
Browninggold 02-05-09, 09:34 PM Your in luck. SV Sub is still offering the PB13Ultra with free shipping. I just sold a Klipsch 12" sub and got the PB13....all I can say is "WOW" what a diffrence. I have never listened to a Paradigm though. My advice for the day is "Grab the Ultra before the free shipping is no more".
Warpdrv 02-05-09, 10:58 PM Return that less then underperforming sub for the state of the art Ultra13 you will never regret it Period.....
Dollar for dollar the Svs will win hands down... Even 2 of those lesser subs can't compete with a single ultra !!!! No contest :)
ndskurfer 02-05-09, 11:32 PM Return it - SVS will blow the Paradigm away.
I used to own a Paradigm Sub not even a year ago, I own an SVS PC13 now :)
The difference was unreal. During heavy hitting scenes, I can actualy feel the bass. Never did get that feeling with the Paradigm (I do love their speakers though).
shawnwalters 02-05-09, 11:35 PM Ok thanks guys, I'll try to return it tomorrow!
programmergeek 02-06-09, 11:05 AM svs is better return the other you would be better off with 2 svs's anyhow then a set of unmatching subs. Just watch putting it behind the screen it may shake the screen a bit. Try it also make sure the sub sounds good where you want ot put it. I made that mistake once when building a HT prewired everything, dough!

Thanks, I plan to return it today. My dead area behind the screen is 36" deep. If I get the Ultra which is 27" deep will that be enough room for it to breathe without shaking the screen? I definitely don't want that! How much air do these things move?

Many people have Ultra's behind AT screens. You may also look at the cylinder PC13 Ultra so the ports and driver are not facing the screen.
As for air, they can move a lot.

Enjoy the SVS!

I definitely don't want that! How much air do these things move?I haven't seen a screen installed that gets close enough to the floor to be bothered by a sub. You have plenty of room for a PB13 and your can turn it sideways if needed. As Snow said, the PC13 may be better for you as it fires up and down instead of forward. And they can move a lot of air.
shawnwalters 02-06-09, 01:01 PM Thanks the downward firing might be a good choice. How does it compare sound wise to the PB13? About the same?
Thanks the downward firing might be a good choice. How does it compare sound wise to the PB13? About the same? Not that you would notice. SVS says a couple DB less max output. I actually prefer the sound of the cylinders, but I've only heard the Plus cylinders and not the Ultra.
Browninggold 02-06-09, 01:11 PM The PB13-Ultra is tuned a few Hz deeper than the PC13-Ultra and also has more internal enclosure volume. As such, it has somewhat higher maximum output capability at the very deepest frequencies when both products are set in the native tune with all ports open. With that said, in actual use both subwoofers sound/perform far more similarly than different.
shawnwalters 02-06-09, 02:59 PM Thanks for all the help!! I returned the ultracube and purchased the PC13-Ultra!

I dunno, but I am thinking the box version might be better if you are concerned about moving the screen. The reason I say this is I do have a cylinder, ports on top of course, which is right next to my curtains. I have seen the rush of air during heavy bass scenes blow my curtains. It depends on just how close those top ports are to the screen hanging down. My Ultra is within a few inches of the curtains. On the other hand, I would imagine the box version would blow air underneath the screen and maybe not even effect it. Food for thought.
Thanks for all the help!! I returned the ultracube and purchased the PC13-Ultra!Can you post some pics of the front of your room and the screen?
shawnwalters 02-06-09, 05:33 PM It's still being built, but these are the latest ones:

I assume the 2x4 on the floor in front of the 2 green ladders in pic3 is where the false wall will be. How much space from the floor to the bottom of he screen will there be?
Trying to figure out if the PB13 on the floor would actually be covered by the screen.

Yes that's the new false wall. Haven't determined that yet, but probably 15-20 inches. I bought the PC13 anyway, I think it'll work great and it'll be a heck of lot easier to move around:D
ndskurfer 02-06-09, 07:47 PM Very good trade. You will love the PC13. I am looking forward to hearing your reaction.
First to the size when it gets there
Second to the output on some mad bass scenes
Also - looks like you have a good theater in the making.
Have fun!

I tried it out a little yesterday and didn't really notice anything spectacular about it while watching tv. Then today I watched a blu ray movie and it was AMAZING!! The sub had endless power and filled the entire room with massive amounts of bass. I'm gonna do some more listening with it, but I love it so far:D
Warpdrv 02-12-09, 11:11 PM Just wait until you get your second one... !!!!!! :D
Just so you know, at the foot of the stairs is probably not a good location. But if it works for you.....:)
Whatever provides the flattest response Randy, you should know that by now!

Probably just about right after riding the "rail" down. You will like the sub, still enjoying ,mine.
I wish I had that kind of cash to spend. Maybe when I hit the lotto and I'll buy 4 - 1 for each corner of my dream room. :p ;)
Whatever provides the flattest response Randy, you should know that by now!And it does go well with the black and white stairs.:)
sourbeef 02-13-09, 07:36 PM Shawnwaters, congrats on the sub, you will love it. Congrats on figuring out how to open the box correctly too ;), vertically down the side.
shawnwalters 02-13-09, 07:49 PM I am happy to report that I absolutely love this sub. I watched Max Payne on Blu Ray and it is amazing. I feel like I'm at the movies and I can literally feel the bass on explosions. The paradigm hypercube isn't even the same league as the SVS. Anyway, I'm happy:D
Just wait until you get your second one... !!!!!! :D

LOL yeah carrying it up was a pain. Carrying it down 2 flights when the theater is ready is gonna suck even more:p

Yeah, the UPS guy left it in my driveway he said it's past the weight limit of carrying it to the door. Atleast I got a workout that day!
