View Full Version : Non Powered Sub Question.
silvershark 02-06-09, 03:13 PM I have a non powered sub that is a few years old and It uses the old stab in type of connections to the back of the sub. However, my receiver STR-DG820 takes an input of a analog looking connection much like my composite cables. I went and purchased a cable that has one side like a composite cable and the other side a + and - bare wire indicator. I have hooked my sub up and I dont get any bass on any input setting. Is this due to the sub, or more than likely due to the speaker setup possibly being that my front speakers are set to large and are stopping the sub from working?
Thanks guys!

You can't run a passive subwoofer from the subwoofer pre-out of the receiver. The pre-out doesn't have amplification, it just passes the signal. It's designed to be used with powered subwoofers because these subwoofers have their own amplifiers. If you want to use this subwoofer, you'll need to get an external amp. What make is your passive subwoofer? My guess is you'd just be better off buying a new subwoofer with a built-in amplifier and using a standard RCA/subwoofer cable to connect it to your receiver.

There were a few receivers that had a (switchable) 6 th channel (of amplification). You could either use the 6 th channel for a 6.1 system, or you could use the 6th channel of amplification to drive a passive subwoofer.
One that I know of is the Kenwood VR-6070. Discontinued a long time ago. But you might be able to find one.
silvershark 02-06-09, 04:54 PM Ok, awesome. That answered my question. I will be going down to the local AV store today to look for a cheap powered sub. It will be going in a 11' wide by 14' long room.
So I imagine I dont need anything very big.

+1. Don't just go out and buy an $80 sub. As sivadselim said yours might be a decent sub and worth buying an amp for. What model is it?
silvershark 02-06-09, 05:33 PM No be honest, I am not sure.
It was given to me as a present a couple years back. There are no labels and it is silver in color. It seemed to work well for its time but I think I need an upgrade.
It was only a 10" sub as well.
I would be looking for a sub around $200 for now.

You might want to consider the Premier Acoustics PA-120. Search "PA-120" on eBay and you'll find them for $229 with free shipping. I think this is basically the only way to get the sub. It's a replacement to the Bic H-100 which had almost a cult following here on AVS for the last couple of years. It's probably about as good a sub as you'll get (new) for under $250.
BTW if you didn't see it, there's actually a PA-120 Thread on the first page of the Subwoofers forum here on AVS:

silvershark 02-06-09, 05:58 PM Thanks again for all the info. However, considering its the weekend and I really want to listen to my sound system I may just go to the local shop and see what I can find.. I know they are going to reem me... But I just sold my gun safe for $400 so I could use that to get a decent sub if need be. Anything mediocore at BestBuy? I know thats a last resort, but there arent many AV places here in town.
Thanks again!
xmenxmenxmen 02-06-09, 06:13 PM If you have a Frys nearby, they have the Veledyne VX10 generally under 150. Or if you want something cheap, there's actually no better place than craiglist as tons of people offload them all the time.
BTW, I also have the PA-120 and it's an amazing sub for the price.
sivadselim 02-06-09, 06:45 PM I know they are going to reem me... If you know that, and that is what happens, I have no pity. :(

silvershark 02-07-09, 01:18 PM Thanks for the suggestions. I went to BB yesterday and found a decent polk that I liked but they wanted too much IMO for a 200watt sub.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8826103&st=sub&lp=6&type=product&cp=1&id=1207352528863
So I guess I will be buying online.
The only problem is that I live in Alaska and the shipping is pretty spendy here. Prolly $100. So that limits my options.
Any other suggestions? I may pickup the Polk if that seems like the best bet.

Again if you're interested in the PA-120 I just checked on ebay and to ship it to Anchorage, AK 99501 it's listing shipping as $50. So the sub would be a total of $279 shipped, but it's a much better sub than the $249 Polk you linked. It's a 12" sub with a better amp and bigger enclosure. I'm not sure what other options you have up there in Alaska, but I think the PA-120 is a great deal under $300 shipped.

Counting watts is not a good way to find a good subwoofer. PA 120 is your best bet. Just find out how much shipping is to Alaska.
silvershark 02-07-09, 07:49 PM Well, I decided to go with a ASW-8 and purchased a new center channel because mine broke in shipping. So I purchased a RC1. My screen also cracked so I am having to spend some money on fixing it..
The move didn't go the best for my HT equipment. :(
My room is really small, its only 11' wide by 14' long. So the 8 should be plenty.
silvershark 02-09-09, 02:04 AM Can anyone clarify for me if the ASW-8 will work with my setup. After viewing pictures online of the rear I noticed that there was a left/right composite type plug in, but not the digital coaxal type I was seeing on other subs in the local stores here.
Will this work with my Sub Pre-out?

Will this work with my Sub Pre-out?Sure.
silvershark 02-09-09, 12:38 PM Thanks.
So, since I only have 1 pre-out connection on the back of my receiver I just plug it into the L channel on the sub or the R channel on the sub? It doesn't matter which one I plug it into? Or do I need to get a splitter and have my single pre-out from my receiver to a double type connector?
Thanks again. This is my first power supplied sub, so sorry if I am coming across so ignorant, the fact is that I am! =)
Here is a quick manual so you dont have to look through a long .pdf for the connection I am talking about on the back of my receiver.
http://www.sony-europe.com/res/attachment/file/24/1213190131224.pdf
If you go to page 4 you will see on the bottom left the single black connector labeled "subwoofer" I dont have a left/right on my receiver.
Here is the manual.
Page 17 shows the connection in the manual.
