I am trying to build a respectable HT in my basement living room. The room is 12'x26' with approx. 8' ceilings. I currently have an old Velodyne DPS-10 for my sub, and I find it somewhat lacking. Can anybody recommend a competitively-priced sub to me? I don't want to go much too over the $1000 mark, but will if I see something I really like. I would also like a sub that isn't the size of a coffee table if I can avoid it. Thanks!

I guess that rules out the eD A7-900 then :p:

In all seriousness, how big is "too big?" There are many great subs out there from companies like Elemental Designs, SVS, Hsu, etc but many of them, while not coffee table sized, are close to end table size. Before we go off recommending a ton of huge subs to you, let us know your size requirements a little more thoroughly. I don't know if your statement "I would also like a sub that isn't the size of a coffee table" was hyperbole and you really want something small, or if you don't mind a large sub but don't want it to take up half of your room.

i think it is safe to say that you have moved past coffee table and end table size and moved right into refridgerater size :)...god that thing is huge. I can only imagin the output of that bad boy :)

As the previous poster said look at ED, SVS, and HSU you can get one heck of a sub from these ID sub guys for 1K

one more question did you through out your back lifting that up for the picture :)

Nope, but I would have had I been the owner ;). That's a picture of craigsub and his son with the A7-900. You could always ask them if they threw out their backs though :p

I am actually interested in the SVS PB12-Plus. Doesn anybody know anything about it? I consistenly hear about the HSU subs being good, well-priced subs. I guess I'm just not all that knowledgeable about subs.

so a 2500 SF room and a pb12- Plus...sound like a good match to me. I dont have actualy experience with SVS but you sure dont hear many complaints aginst them...

I my self have an ED sub and would not hesitate to recommend them to you.

Honestly if you pick up a $1000 sub from ED, SVS, or HSU i am going to say you will be satasfied with what ever you decide. Just take a look and see which finish you like an pull the trigger...you will not be disapointed

I was actually thinking of recommending the PB12-Plus. However, you'd listed a budget and that you were trying to stay near $1,000 and the PB12-Plus is over $1,200 with shipping. It's also somewhat large and I didn't know if it was "too big." Apparently not :). I've never heard the PB12-Plus so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. However, I have heard entry level SVS's (I owned two PB10-NSD's in the past) as well as their flagship PB13-Ultra at another forum member's home and can recommend SVS wholeheartedly. Their customer service is truly top notch, and their products perform very well. The PB12-Plus should be a very big upgrade from a Velodyne DPS-10. The new PB12-Plus is said to sound similar to the PB13-Ultra but with less output and deep extension. Bottom line: if you think the PB12-Plus looks nice, fits your size requirements, and is within your budget, I think it would be an excellent choice for your room.

Thanks all of you! I really appreciate your input. I may have to take a closer look at elemental designs. The PB12-plus may be the way to go though.
