I have enough money to upgrade one item now. Should it be the reciever first and fill in the rest later?

What do you have in your system currently?

Your upgrade path should be based on the thing that annoys you the most.

A receiver may let you simplify your operation or wiring. Speakers could improve your sound. A better subwoofer could improve your bass.
