View Full Version : [Requests] PS3 Media Server Thumbnails
Bozster 02-07-09, 06:42 PM Since I've received a few requests from people who don't have Photoshop to utilize my PSD templates for covers for PS3 media server (but it should be possible to use these with other streamers etc) I've decided to start this thread where those, who don't have the know how to make the cool covers from my files, can request movie titles and I will post the version in PNG so you can use it.
Just submit your requests in the following form:
1. Title name
2. HD or SD
3. Format (DVD, BD, HD DVD)
So sample would be like this:
1. Tomb Raider
2. HD
3. Blu-Ray
So your delivery file will look like this:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3395/3260929543_23e02c05d1_o.png
Those who can make the files based on my templates are also encouraged to help the others in their requests because we all know how great it feels when you browse through your collection of movies and have nice covers.
Please join the Flickr Group here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ps3mscovers/ and you can contribute.

Dark_Wizard 02-08-09, 08:35 AM Great! Added to favorites.
Any chance on posting to Flickr what you already have? I have over 400 movies and chances are you may already have what I or others need.
Again, thanks for all your hard work and willingness to do this.
Bob
Bozster 02-09-09, 01:58 PM Bob, I'll do that as soon as I get some time this week. I'm also making a template for DVD as others have asked for it.
MechaPoitier 02-09-09, 04:12 PM This sounds great. Do you want them submitted in this thread or through PM? Also, can I submit a bunch at one time or should I submit them individually?

I think best way is for you joining the flickr group and submit there. This way we can all have one spot source for all thumbnails.
MechaPoitier 02-09-09, 06:19 PM Sounds good. I'll be signed up under my PSN ID name.
Dark_Wizard 02-09-09, 08:06 PM Good news. A very close friend of mine who is a Graphics Designer let me use one of his licenses for CS4 and I am now cranking out quite a few of these and would be happy to share. I have done over 300 images to date.
Bob
/Edit: I just added 132 to Flickr...

Dark_Wizard 02-10-09, 05:46 PM Bozster,
You definitely have talent in PS, would you have the time to make a folder template? I would like to have my folders with names i.e. Action, Thriller, etc... and keep the others for the actual movies...
Bob
Ratnrol 02-10-09, 09:41 PM Thank-you. What a lot of work!
Cheers and thanks for your efforts.
Bozster 02-11-09, 02:22 AM Bob, I'll do it tomorrow.. btw you are a machine.. slow down :) I can't keep up with comparison of titles I have when you are pumping them out this fast :)

Boz,
I have found a set of folders ready to be used along with a psd template, the author is cgreenle and was in the SageTV files section. Here is a sample....

Hey Bob,
I have a question about these folder templates. Can they be used as folder art in PS3 Media Server. More specifically, I have my movies arranged like this: /Movies/Comedy/[Individual Movies w/Cover Art]; could this folder template be used so that when I open up the "Movies" folder there will be album art/folder art for the "Comedy" folder and then individual box art for the movies? If so that would be awesome......how do I do that? I asked this question in the PS3 Media Server thread and was told it was not possible.

As far as I know this cannot be done yet but I and a few others have requested it. I think if enough people add to the thread maybe Shagrath would work on it quicker...
FYI, here is the link to the discussion -> http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=479

This is going to be used for folders in PS3M when it is implemented and can be used now for anyone not wanting to clutter up their folders with images for all the movies....
You can make nicer ones than these? Can't wait to see them as I thought these were really nice....
philby85 02-11-09, 04:37 PM Hi All,
Is there a tutorial on how to use the template? I would like to contribute some covers.
cheers

shagrath78 02-11-09, 06:11 PM or better, I can directly use your template so you do not have to add the cover in Photoshop :)
and don't bother working on folders icons, ps3 does not support them
rettenhu 02-11-09, 06:24 PM There seems to be a sudden groundswell of enthusiasm about video thumbnails both here and on the PS3 media server forum here: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=34. And, others are offering their templates their as well.
Bozster, I've been "advertising" for your template there as "rickster53", but pointing folks here so you get the deserved credit! :)

I am not understanding how you can use the template, can you explain in more detail?
Lastly, if the PS3 doesn't support folder icons how is it if we place icons in a folder in the root call "Pictures" and place 128x128 images there we can change any folder to now use those images by hitting the triangle button?
FYI, I believe the folder change was added in FW 2.40 if I remember correctly....

Hi DW,
How do you create the folder called pictures? create it on a usb drive and copy? Does the image have to be called something?
A step by step for US dummies would be handy to try it out.:)
OK, I think I understand, this only works in the photo section of the XMB. I copied a folder from a usb stick which had a 128 X 128 pic. And the pic shows on the folder. It's a shame you cant do it on the video section of the XMB.

shagrath78 02-11-09, 08:28 PM Can you elaborate on how you can directly use the template in the PS3 Media Server?
not for now but I can add an automatic movie cover insertion into the template, no need to create those images, just put the movie cover along the video.
don't know If i can manage transparency though (it was just a idea, maybe it's not that easy to do)

The Pictures folder needs to be in the root of the drive, same level as Photos.
reddevilmeuk 02-12-09, 07:38 AM using the template, i'll try to add some too as im a big HD fan streaming to the PS3 :)
Think it may be better if the pics were put into some sort of A-Z though, as it's already 7 pages long...

I am not a Photoshop wizard, nor do I know Java, but just thinking about it, PS3 Media Server would have to either:
Option A (What we do manually now with the template but in real time)
1. Already have Photoshop on the PC to open the template
2. Merge, position and scale the movie cover into the template
3. Save the merged file to png or jpg
4. Send to PS3
Option B (Same as Option A but without Photoshop on the PC)
1. Store template as a bitmap on the PC as part of PS3 Media Server Install
2. Convert movie cover (assumed to be a jpg file) to bitmap
3. Merge, position and scale the bitmap movie cover into the bitmap template
4. Save the merged file to png or jpg
5. Send to PS3
Option C
1. Create a batch processing tool that uses either Option A or Option B one time (and as needed when new video files are added to your collection)
2. Store the resulting file in the appropriate directory on the PC.
Note: For all options, the source movie cover files would have to have the appropriate file naming convention to match the video file (ie. videofilename.extension.cover.jpg), so they match up when sent to the PS3.
Neither option A or B could be done in real time, so Option C seems the only viable way to go. Perhaps there is another approach that Shagrath has in mind, as the PS3 Media server can generate thumbnails now directly from the video file in "real time". (???)
Frankly, I'd rather just have the capability to generate folder thumbnails because there are many sources on the internet for movie thumbnails/covers that may not be as elaborate as what Bozster has created, but they can be used "as-is". But I also know that folder thumbnail support is dependent on PS3 support...

reddevilmeuk 02-12-09, 10:11 AM is it possible to have a 720p in a box just like the SD | HD ? for those TV rips we have?
Dark_Wizard 02-12-09, 02:04 PM is it possible to have a 720p in a box just like the SD | HD ? for those TV rips we have?
You would have to unlock the BoxArt Elements go to Full HD Icon and expand it then edit the HD Label layer and save it....

That's nice.. thanks Rettenhu. This was actually something I just thought would be nice for people to have. Unified look and feel for the digital files so it looks great as you browse through your collection.
In general I'm so slammed these days with work. But this weekend I'll try to update stuff, add a few more types of covers for TV Shows, folder Icons etc.
Will post here.

Chacolla 02-13-09, 12:29 PM Hey, I really appreciate the work you've done here. They are great.
I do have a question, though. I got this working with my regular video files/TV shows that I've converted to a single file format. How do I use these with ISO files, though? For some reason, through this application, ISO files show up as a folder and then contained in the folder is the title listing. For all my ISO movies, I only rip the main title of the movie with no other titles/menus/etc. How can I use these thumbnails with ISOs?
Thanks!

Chacolla 02-13-09, 03:18 PM Yes, it doesn't work. :\
Weird...
Bozster 02-13-09, 07:32 PM Guys.. I might have to move hosting to my server and create a custom upload group.. The reason for this is that Flickr Group thing blows. We can't sort uploads to folders like: TV Shows, HD, SD, 720p folders and sort them by name so I will code out stuff on my own server and give public upload rights to the server via FTP so it can be uploaded by name and sorted properly and so we can have search ability too.
Browsing and searching for a specific title on Flickr Group is HELL! :)
I'll work on this on the weekend as well.

That's good but 2 things..
I tried losing the blue glow as it looked a bit cheesy.
And yellow text mixes up too much when scrolling..
Try to do this.. Copy Style on your layer for HD and apply it to 720p
That way it will have the same metallic look and will look spectacular. ;)

reddevilmeuk 02-14-09, 02:52 PM great work, and thanks for the 720p
i've been playing with the images and the ones we are currently using seem a little small (especially for the kids) when on a 40" 1080p TV... I then played with images just as covers on their own, and now using the full height...
kids, seem to prefer them, but i think I may create a halfway house,, still playing before I comit my full library pictures...
currently using the format of

If you are going to go through this effort, there are some things you might want to think about and/or consider...
Should there be a standard template(s), so the thumbnails are consistent?
Should there be a standard/minimum resolution for the DVD artwork that's used with the template (s)?
Should there be a standard naming convention for the thumbnails, possibly using the PS3 Media Server's naming convention, or perhaps another naming convention?
I don't necessarily have the answer for any of these questions and there are probably others as well. Since you're making the effort to set this up, I think it should be your call as to whether you want to set up any guidelines or standards that you'd like to see everyone follow...

I tend to disagree. The variety will add more of a selection process for anyone wanting them, not everyone has the same tastes. If anything let each user have their own folders with their artwork/psd and I think this would be better in the long run and a happier community.

I actually don't have strong feelings one way or the other. My post was simply meant for Bozster to consider what, if any, standards, he might think are worthwhile, given how he might set this up. Now would be the time to do that. :) Example: One of Bozster's major concerns with Flickr was its poor sort and search capabilities. Well, without a standardized thumbnail naming convention, you can't do meaningful sort or search...
Bozster 02-14-09, 05:43 PM I see what you guys are saying.. here's what i had in mind..
I wanted to make templates for each type of video.
So full HD would have BD type cover
In the same style DVD/SD content would have DVD cover
720p and HDTV would have maybe HDTV designation or resolution (be it 720p or 1080i or 1080p)
I do want them sorted out in a way so we can either,
a) upload covers to a specific LETTER folder, or
b) name the movie and then allow search. This would help everyone browse through our group library with ease and find the exact movie or show or whatever they are looking for in 2 secs.
I think we should kind of make a name template so Tomb Raider Cradle of Life would be:
TombRaiderCradleOfLife.xxx.cover.png so a person can replace the xxx with whatever format they have the video in.
This will be hard to control. So once we have a full nice setup for uploading covers it's not a huge problem and check each day and even if necessary I will rename the files to be easily searchable.
Another thing is that we could allow META TAGS so you can enter movie info or similar there and then include that in search.
I wish we could get PS3MS creator to integrate dynamic support for covers like ours here. So nobody has to even deal with photoshop. They could do the following:
1. Mask the thumbnail with the appropriate cover template and then just load in specific size image to fit in the inner area of the template. THis i is the only cool way to make them usable but I don't think it's possible, so our templates would have to be the way they are.
Dark_Wizard, I am thin with time but if you want to help try to make a small script in PHP that will read the folder filenames on the server with PNG extension and generate the XML file out of it. I would like to try something so if you have some free time, it would appreciated.
reddevilmeuk 02-14-09, 07:24 PM one question seems to spring to mind, are we gonna then have duplicate titles for the 720p | 1080p and DVD Range? whats the point when all the layers could be in the same template, all you'd need to do is select the correct layers from the template and then add the cover? or is the point that people are just going to upload their collections?
Bozster 02-14-09, 07:36 PM one question seems to spring to mind, are we gonna then have duplicate titles for the 720p | 1080p and DVD Range? whats the point when all the layers could be in the same template, all you'd need to do is select the correct layers from the template and then add the cover? or is the point that people are just going to upload their collections?
Well no... essentially we have 3 templates. 1 HD (full HD - BD rips), DVD/SD version and the HDTV version (TV shows etc). So for HDTV there could be modification to HDTV 720p, HDTV 1080i, HDTV 1080p but we could just leave HDTV marking and that's it.

Ok, two things come to mind real quick...are you using PHP5? Lastly, how do you want the data in the xml file?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<movie>

Chacolla 02-15-09, 08:39 AM Anyone have any ideas about the thumbnails for ISO files?
:(
rettenhu 02-15-09, 10:17 AM I wish we could get PS3MS creator to integrate dynamic support for covers like ours here. So nobody has to even deal with photoshop. They could do the following:

I'm not sure if the image could be positioned and sized automatically, or whether this can be done in real time as you scroll down a list of movies. My thumbnails always lag behind my scrolling and I have to wait for them to catch up if I want to see them. I have an old P4 2.0Ghz PC so maybe that's the problem, but I am on a 100mb wired connection so I know it's not the network...
I am not a Photoshop guy but if there's anything I can do to help, let me know as I have spare time... I'd be glad to help out as a beta tester and/or help with maintainence of incorrect filenames, etc., if my direct access is possible. Just let me know... :-)
rettenhu 02-15-09, 10:43 AM Bozster, I think it would be helpful if you could maximize the size of the DVD artwork, within the constraint of the thumbnail size, as suggested by reddevilmeuk in his post above. Regardless of which movie templates you decide to go with every extra pixel in the size of the artwork makes the cover look better as well as easier to see and read!

My thumbnails always lag behind my scrolling and I have to wait for them to catch up if I want to see them. I have an old P4 2.0Ghz PC so maybe that's the problem, but I am on a 100mb wired connection so I know it's not the network..
Well the trick with generating thumbnails is that PS3MS would have to do it on the PC before sending/streaming the thumbnail to PS3. Similar to what GD Library does on PHP on the server side. It can crop, resize etc files on the web on-fly on server side and just spit it out to you in the browser.
But this is dreaming. It would require significant effort from the maker of PS3MS to just build code to accomodate the template. Never gonna happen unfortunately.
Bozster 02-15-09, 04:54 PM Ok, two things come to mind real quick...are you using PHP5? Lastly, how do you want the data in the xml file?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<movie>
<name>Wanted</name>
</movie>
Sure, so it would look like this
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<movie>
<name>Wanted</name>
<filename>wanted.cover.png</filename>
<folder>_action</folder>
</movie>
Chacolla 02-20-09, 12:39 PM so no one can figure out how to get thumbnails to work with ISO files, huh? This sucks, all of my DVDs are going to be ripped in ISO
Stryker412 02-20-09, 01:15 PM 1. Star Wars (all 6 please)

3. DVD
I just found out about PS3 Media server and hope to set it up tonight.

it's not supported

Forever? Or can this be fixed with an update? I'd really appreciate this to be addressed in a future update! This is the best program I've used and this will be the icing on the cake for me!
Bozster 02-21-09, 01:31 PM @shagrath
Could you lower the compression on the cover art? With 1.04 version it seems you have increased the compression ratio probably to try to speed up thumb loading but now thumbs really look bad. It's not a huge issue with flat photos of cover art but with PNGs like I did and others have modified now the quality is over-compressed and looks pretty bad.
You think you could lower the compression so the PNG thumbnails are clearer?
imdjenk 02-21-09, 03:52 PM Can somebody kindly post a screenshot of their XMB with thumbnails enabled? Thanks!
Stryker412 02-22-09, 08:52 AM 1. Pirates of the Caribbean
2. HD
3. Blu-Ray
Did my first rip last night, and it looks awesome.

imdjenk 02-22-09, 11:05 AM Thanks, lvisneau looks great. Now I am determined to get this to work.
Stryker what program did you use for ripping and what format?
Stryker412 02-22-09, 11:19 AM I used AnyDVDHD to rip the disc to the HDD, then used Tmuxer to rip just the video and the DD 5.1 stream (my receiver doesn't handle the new sound formats).
TimHuey 02-23-09, 08:25 AM Stryker,
Not that you want to know but just in case you didn't know, MEnconder seems to play the .m2ts files with DTS-HD MA tracks without having to do the Tmuxer step. I used it to play Devil Wears Prada which is played in french unless you use MEncoder. Could help you loose a step if your interested.
Stryker412 02-27-09, 06:26 PM Is Bozster not doing requests anymore?

I know he's swamped right now with work at his job. If you're looking for a few thumbnails to be created for you, PM me with the list and attach the template you want to use and I'll give it a shot for you...
Bozster 03-02-09, 11:51 AM Sorry guys..I'm still here it's just that work has been completely insane.. I'm finishing the launch of some new music service this week and should be back on covers and other niceties.

No problem, we appreciate your time.
Thanks for posting the example lvisneau, I think it looks great.
I have had a play around with using the horizontal covers from TMDb and they look pretty good as well.
Unfortunately for me, viewing streaming movies from my '08 MacBook Pro over my wireless network was not up to the task and I can't go wired. SO I'm back to connecting my WD MyBook 1TB Drive directly to the PS3 for a more speedy yet less elegant solution!
Would have been wonderful if movie artwork could be viewed from an external hdd as well. I can still dream.
On a tangent, to improve the WAF of my setup-up. I have actually dumped Meta Data into the file name which the PS3 happily scrolls through. This has helped my wife know what the movie is about and reminds me what's in SD or HD. For example, before hand my movie file name would just give the film's name:
The Longest Day
after dumping info into the filename it looks like this:
The Longest Day [SD] WAR - The events of D-Day, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view (1962)
The PS3 automatically scrolls through long file names at a nice pace (a nice touch) and it helps viewers with what the film is about. Just thought I would share my little solution to the lack of meta data support.
Just posted 60 new cover icons for both 720p and 1080p on Flickr.
You may use the Flickr search function to find a cover for a movie you have (within the group)
Anybody know if my account on Flickr may be banner for this sort of copyrighted content?
Stryker412 04-06-09, 03:10 PM Thanks for all those adds, can you do one for the Pirates Trilogy?
Chacolla 04-14-09, 11:23 AM Not sure if this has been discussed before or not (couldn't find any information on it), but how does one:
Use a thumbnail for a folder (say I have "D:/TV Shows/The Office/s04e03.mkv"...I would want the folder titled The Office to have a thumbnail. Is this possible?)
Create a thumbnail for a Video_TS folder. I'm still trying to figure out a way to rip my DVDs without having to encode/compress it into a .avi or .mkv or XviD file just to have a thumbnail.

Chacolla,
1. Unfortunately, I believe folder thumbnails are not supported (I think this is a PS3 limitation) - I ended up putting all my movies sorted by genre in one folder and putting thumbnails into the cover folder (new PS3 media server allows you to specify both one central covers directory and one subtitles directory) - and if you name the thumbnail "s04e03.png" it will appear as a thumb for "s04e03.mkv" (this works now - no need to name it "s04e03.mkv.cover.png")
2. This I don't have experience with.
Good Luck.

Stryker412, you got it - please check Flickr.

:D That makes me 0 for 2. Thanks for the help anyways though, I appreciate it
Bender907 10-03-11, 03:35 AM I know the last post for this was a while ago, However after spending some time generating thumbnails for all my video files, being able to create a thumbnail for "Movie" "TV" etc. folders would be awesome. Please please please include this in the next update :)
Also is it possible to add an additional image to splash up on screen behind the selected video file like XBMC? The same as how a highlighted game will display a splash? XBMC use "-fanart" saved with video file and thumbnail in the folder to do this.
