Well ive been looking real hard at the Definitive Tech Pro Sub 1000 , i listened to it and was impressed. I compared it to the Martin Logan Dynamo in the same room and felt it was every bit as tight and had as much pop as the Dynamo. And the Def Tech was within my price range of 500 dollars.

However after reading all the good things people have to say about the Outlaws and the great sale price on the LFM Compact im torn. Saving a couple hundred dollars while still getting a quality sub is very tempting ! However i have a concern about the fact that i have laminate floors and not sure if a down firing sub would be best for my application ?
My room is only 13 x 23 x 9 so im pretty sure that either would work as far as the size of the room. What do you guys think ?

My primary use would be HT , however music is very important as well. My primary music is Classic Rock with some Blues and Jazz mixed in too.

Id appreciate any input , ive never owned either product and would welcome any comparisons as well.

Thanks

why buy a new sub without servo mech? costs a bit more, but speakers are something you can keep a long time. Why buy a sub using old tech (oh boy, stiff woofers and floor spikes) when you can, for a bit, ok sometimes quite a bit more, get one with servo and/or EQ, remote etc. Velodyne/rythmik/paradigm are a good place to start. No matter what you get be sure to eq your room

What is your primary application? HT or music?

The laminate floors will be OK for a subwoofer(not so much for speakers), but your room is not small, and if you want spirited levels, I am not sure the LFM Compact would do the trick.

The Pro Sub was 300 rms and a 10 in driver like the Outlaw , however the Outlaw was running less power.
I was concerned about a down firing sub bouncing off the floors . what would that do to the sound ?

wattage has is not a good indication of how much output the subwoofer will have without knowing the efficiency of the driver. In your room, a 10" driver will be challenged at higher output levels.

The downfiring and floor should not be an issue, but you could easily place a piece of carpet under the sub if needed.

If you want to stick with Outlaw, and $500 is your budget, then the LFM-1EX is a great deal right now.

Curtis, what do you mean by "spirited"? I hooked up my new LFM-1 Compact in our 18x13x9 room (wide open to a kitchen area of almost that size), and this thing puts out a lot of bass!

Now I know some of you guys like to listen 12-15 dB down from reference, but that is too loud for me (and for the house--the POS might fall down). :p

By the way, are all amps the same when they read out in dB for the volume? I have a Panasonic XR55, and I swear my eardrums would burst if I played it at 0dB. Or -10dB for that matter.

Hey Dave....all receivers are not the same. 0dB should be calibrated for for reference. It would be interesting what levels you are actually listening to.

I think the LFM-1 Compact would be OK for most people in a room your size. Also depends on how close you are sitting to it.

I also forgot I'm running the powered bass stands at the same time. They're kind of like mini sealed subs. I should turn them off to see if the LFM-1 Compact could handle the room by itself.

Of course that makes sense; speakers all have different sensitivities, too.

I have a budget as well, esp in this economy, and I did not say I was not a fan. My current sub is a cheapy JBL, which is way under spec for my huge room, but when/if the situation we all are dealing with turns around I will buy a Rythmik or Velodyne if the price is right. I am sure you will be happy with either Deftech or Logan lots of happy customers of both. I would take the Logan meself, having heard them and not the deftech. Just tryin to help!

Edit - for disclosure, I am more interested in musicality than huige thump for movies, I rarely have the chance to really crank my system as I have a 2 yr old.

My source is a ps3, logitech squeezebox, speakers are polk rti12a, csi6 and FXi6 surrounds, used luxman m117, used anthem MCA2, old Yamaha 657 receiver, hardly big money items compared to most fanatics on this site;> My next upgrade will be sub, then receiver. No rush tho.
