View Full Version : No dts sound
love2fly 02-08-09, 12:57 PM I updated my DVD player and Tv to HDTV set and my DVd is phillips 59990 1080P upconverting, it suports DTS.
My previous set up was a sony DVD disc changer with optical sound output which was connected to an onkyo 5.1 amp which has optical and coax digital sound inputs. The amp/receiver has DTS and dolby prologic decoder.
I was able to enjoy DTS sound DVDs.
The onkyo receiver automatically selected DTS if it was available on the DVD, if not i went to dolby
with my new setup the DVD player has HDMI and coax sound output. hooked to my TV via HDMI and to the receiver via coax( for sound).
When I play a DVd with DTS sound only, there is no sound coming out of the receiver or from the TV.
help please

Go into the DVD menu and make sure you tell it to output DTS.
love2fly 02-08-09, 01:47 PM The only options in the DVD menu are:
select eighter
HDMI sound out
or
digital out
under digital I selected : ALL
still no sound
I believe it is the DVD player that is causing the problem since there is no sound on the TV or through the receiver, DTS light never shows on the receiver.
the DVd is only conected to the receiver via coax. dolby sound pass through it, so the cable, connections and the receiver is good.
sivadselim 02-08-09, 02:21 PM Set your DVD player up to bitstream DTS.
When I play a DVd with DTS sound only,
There isn't supposed to be such a disk. DVD's are required to have either DD or PCM. DTS is only optional. What disk is it?

Perhaps........
HDMI out to TV = No DTS. Why? TV does not have a DTS decoder.
If you select "HDMI sound out" it probably disables the "digital out". Therefore... no DTS in AV receiver.
Remove the HDMI, connect component for video (temporarily) and digital coax/optical for audio to A/V receiver to test. Obviously, set audio settings in the DVD player accordingly.
Just a guess and suggestion... ;)
BTW... can you provide an accurate model number of the "DVd is phillips 59990 1080P upconverting"? I'd like to see if I can read the manual and specs for you. Thanks
Nevermind (perhaps)...
If the correct model number is the Philips DVP5990, it doesn't support DTS. ;)

Cons: This player lacks DTS output capability, so it will not play back DTS soundtracks.

The CNET review is for a "/37".... the Philips is for a "/05". What model do you have? Perhaps Philips has a firmware upgrade (assuming no "pilot error" on your part).
love2fly 02-08-09, 05:17 PM The dvd player is a Phillips DVP5990
the dvd is a disk I made with dts sound only , removed all other.
Thank you guys , I found the problem.
in the dvd setup menu when HDMI sound is ON, no other digital output can be selected (selection is grey-unavailable)
sound goes to TV fine ( but not with my DTS only disk) other dvds work of course.
When HDMI sound disabled in DVD setup menu, digital sound can selected, options are PCM, ALL or OFF.
for some reason it is defaulted to PCM. I recall specifically setting it to ALL.
Bottom line:
1), thank you for your help,
2) I am glad I can play DTS with my DVD and receiver- I like it.
3) it sucks that the dvd sound menu is setup this way, if I play a dvd and want to listen to sound through the TV or via my wireless headphones I must go through the dvd menu and select HDMI on,
but if I want to turn on the surround sound via the receiver, now I have to go through the DVD setup menu again, disable HDMI sound and select digital/all.
I find it "un-userfriendly", phillips should have just let the users select both sound outputs ON if they choose. (even if one or the other is not being used)
Oh well....
thanks again

See....CNET is wrong on this----> "it does not suport DTS"
"Please note that the set will only output the DTS bitstream via the coaxial output OR HDMI output. The connected device (for example an audio amplifier) will decode it."
what it refers to is that the DVD player it self will not decode DTS and send it to a TV via HDMI. A coax or HDMI receiver has to decode it.
thanks again , I got my sound back...see my post above.
Refer to the links I provided...
one is a /37 model and the other (from Philips) is the /05 model, which apparently was your problem. Not necessarily "wrong", just different versions. ;)
love2fly 02-08-09, 05:30 PM You said "the solution is to leave both soundtracks on the DVD"
Mine is the newer model....just bought it.
See that is not the solution.
Even if the DVD has both , I need to go through the DVd sound menu to to switch between:
A---- HDMI sound to TV (which I mostly listen to )
B-----or if I want DTS surround through my receiver (first need to disable HDMI audio out in the DVD sound menu or the player will not send DTS via coax.
Option 3 buy a new receiver with HDMI input /out put......NOT;)
Whatever... enjoy.
The manual and FAQ's from Philips explains it all. Glad to spend my time googling and reading for you. ;)
love2fly 02-08-09, 05:44 PM And I DO thank you for that :o
