View Full Version : What subwoofer for authoritative low bass?

I am looking to upgrade from my Infinity IL50 towers with built in 10" subs. They sound alright but are very much lacking from 35~hz on down. This is what I need most out of a subwoofer. I am very much a fan of the lowest of audible sound waves. I am talking 25hz and down. I would like the best sub I can find that meets my requirements and plays low enough to shift tectonic plates. I have little experience with home theater subs, but I used to have a 13^3 ft. box with 2 15's and 140^2 in. of port tuned to 26 hz in my car audio days if that's any indication of what I look for in my bass :D
I would like to get the best sub I can afford now, and if I feel the need down the road (and it always happens) I will add a second matching sub.

Thanks in advance for the help!

1. Your budget.
Hopefully $600 or under. If there is a big enough performance difference however I could probably pony up a couple hundred more.

2. Size requirements/limits.
Really, I could care less. Box, cylinder, whatever will get lowest.

3. Room dimensions.
HT room right now is 18x14. It is a rental house though and the next place I move to I will require a larger HT room. (also part of my desire to add a second matching sub down the road.)

4. Primary uses.
50% Music 40% Movies 10% XBOX

5. Listening habits.
Honestly, music as loud as I can stand it when I am the only one home. Movies, not really ever at reference level unless I am impressing people.

6. Appearance requirements.
Again, I could care less what it looks like as long as it hits 20hz and deeper with some authority.

7. Timeframe.
I would LIKE this within the next month but I would be willing to wait longer if it were worth the wait.

8. Search the forum.
Been there done that, would like some newer input with so many new ID brands and offerings out there.

Thanks so much!

Interesting, I forgot about parts express.
I would probably need to build a ported box to get the output I am looking for but that is within the realm of possibility.

I forgot to mention, this will be crossed over at 60hz for sure. 50 or 40hz even if I can get my Infinity's to fill the gap to 80hz.
So its performance above 50hz is not needed.

110dB @ 25Hz ain't too shaby an output...at all...;)

If you are goingto build your own cabinet just buy the driver & amp from PE and save a bundle...

I would prefer not to build my own but if that is going to be head-and-shoulders above anything else in the price range I guess I am not scared to do it.

for that budget, I would suggest finding a used SVS cylinder sub. It will really fill in those lower octaves that you are looking for. You can search ebay and audiogon for some deals. Try to get a plus series or even an ultra if you are lucky enough to come across a used one. If you are only interested in new, I think that you should raise up your budget by a few hundred. There are not many subs to choose from at the 600.00 shipped budget price.

The Epik Knight I got is $600 excluding shipping and shakes the neighbors house sometimes (no, not in a townhouse/condo). I'm in love with it. Unfortunately they are not selling any more right now, but people in the Epik thread have been talking about rumors of them selling again soon.

I would suggest you consider the SVS PC 12 NSD it will be within a few dollars of $600. shipped. This would be my favorite choice non-DIY and although DIY is a great way to go I personally prefer to be at the $700 plus box costs to bother with DIY, not that it can't be good and a better value but my time is just worth more to me than the money saved.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look around for some used SVS equipment and see what turns up.
I am not set in stone on the $600, I would prefer it to be around there, but if there is something more worthwhile as far as what I am looking for, I can just save a little longer.

Well after looking at tons of response charts it does seem like SVS is the no-brainer option for 20hz and lower. I think I am going to save a little more and get a pc12+ or if I come across a good deal on a used cylinder I will go that route.
I had thought I was going to need a 15" or 18" even for real deep bass reproduction but that doesn't seem to be the case.

SVS subs are great. I've owned 2 ( I currently have a SVS cylinder sub ) and couldn't be happier!!

So I guess now I've settled on a brand... now I need to pick a model.
I'm sure I'll be happy with any SVS cylinder, is there anyone who has experience with different models that can share some experience?
I am mainly considering the 16-46PC+, 20-39PC+, PC12-NSD, PC12-Plus, with the chance of saving longer for a PC13-Ultra.
The nice thing about the first 4 listed is I could order them immediately.
I hate being patient....

I appreciate all the advice thus far and look forward to any insight anyone has on this topic.

To rehash an old adage from these parts, "No one ever wished they had less sub."

If the Ultra is on your radar, my vote would be to save up a little more and go for that. Especially if you are thinking of going to a larger room/house for your theater. The other subs all have their strengths, chief amongst them that they are within your immediate means, but the Ultra is a very special sub.

Most people tend to continue up the sub ladder, if you can wait for the Ultra you won't regret it.

I can help you cut down the list though the 16-46PC+ and 20-39PC+ are old models that I am pretty sure are not available now.

haha, yes, i am for real.
If you have ever experienced real bass output around 20hz or lower, you would understand.
Anyways,
I acquired an SVS PB12-Ultra tonight.
Setting it up and choosing between 12hz and 16hz tuning is next :D

Thanks for all the good advice.

Jay,

Congrats on the PB-12. You're going to love it.

Unless your room is really small and the sub located close to you, the 12hz tune is probably going to be pushing it too much. Not just in port noise potential, but at louder volumes you'll tend to notice a smearing type of distortion of the very lowest bass in that tune.

16hz will give you plenty of very clean extension, and 20hz will be punchier. No bad choice between those 2.

Enjoy!

Thanks!
Turns out you are exactly right. In 12hz mode there tends to be a decent amount of port noise in scenes with excessive bass. I do like 16hz mode much more.
This thing is amazing, it gets stupid loud if asked to, has tons of impact, and sounds awesome with music.
I find it hard to believe the PB/PC13 is even better than this
