EnergyOwner 02-08-09, 01:38 PM Speakers are THE most important choice. HTIB speakers aren't very good. Buy the separates.

any suggestions guys remember my budget is 550 I can probably push it for 600....
Best Buy sells Polk, Klipsch, Def Tech, and I think Mirage. Any of those would be good, but listen to them, as they each have different sounds (not necessarily better sounds than the others.)
Yamaha receivers are sold there. Harmon-Kardon would be a good choice, too, but it might reduce your speaker budget. Sony would also work, although I like Yamaha better. I can't remember who makes the Insignia receivers (Insignia is Best Buy's house brand) but I'd look at the others first.

you guys think you could put together a speaker system and receiver from bestbuy.com that would be better then the htib
For your budget, it would be tough to get it all at once. You might have to sacrifice the subwoofer or something, or get a stupendous deal on a 5.1 speaker package.
In the long run, though, you would outperform a HTIB. The speakers in those are just mediocre at best (and that's assuming you get one from Yamaha or something and not the cheap all-in-one-DVD-player/receiver types.)

For $600? Probably not, though I haven't been in a BB lately. Maybe they can put something together with their house-brand (Insignia) speakers.
My first suggestion is, go in and see what they recommend for your budget, and report back to us.
My second suggestion (maybe it should have been the first) is to consider getting just a 2.1 system instead of 5.1. You'll be sacrificing the surround aspect (although your DVD player can simulate this, to some extent), but getting better, more accurate speakers.
Whatever you do, remember that you want to put more money into your speakers than your receiver.
snavid972 02-08-09, 02:34 PM so insignia is not a bad brand? what wattage is good for a receiver and what components should i be looking for on it, im using it for ps3 and dtv receiver....as far as speakers whats the main then to look for

At you price point you won't have much of a choice in features for the receiver. Since you have a PS3, you won't even need the HD audio format decoding since the PS3 does that for you. The receiver must be able to accept HDMI audio, however.
Speakers are something you will need to listen to. Do they sound good at levels you feel comfortable with? How is the bass (muddy or tight)? TBH you have your work cut out for you at the price but be patient and consider a 2.1 speaker setup first. Most AVRs can do a phantom center speaker and any old speaker will do for surrounds at this price level (see what you can salvage from around the house). Buy your speaker cable at Home Depot (16 or 18 AWG lamp cord should suffice).
PS Bargain hard. You are buying a package so they should knock off a few % from the total for you.
dr_bling 02-08-09, 05:50 PM STOP....

I work at BBY in the HT department. Go in ask for Polk audio RM675 speaker package it just price dropped from 699 to 199. Pair it up with receiver of your choice...I like HK but it's alot to do with what features you need.

EnergyOwner 02-08-09, 10:51 PM Well done! Your original budget was too small but now you should be set for a while. Best thing to do now is hook it up and enjoy it. :)

so did I do good you guys make me happy when you say nice system you guys are the **** couldnt of done it with out you guys thank god i didnt go with a htib lol
Toys7505 02-08-09, 11:43 PM Yup, I think you got a great deal and great starter package to your home theater......now you have been bitten by the bug Lol.......you will soon get the "fever" to upgrade something.....better receiver, better speakers, etc....If I were you, I would look at upgrading the receiver down the line...only because your system will only be as good as your weakest link. If you have better electronics in the source chain, then your speakers will sound better in the end. My theory is, put more $$ into the electronics which will give you a better foundation to build on. You will be amazed at the same speakers sound with a better amp section or even more power given to them. Just some food for thought and I hope you are satisified with your purchase as you will be using it and listening to it every day.
notoriousmatty 02-09-09, 09:36 AM while I respect the above posters opinion, I and maaaaany others will disagree. That receiver is fine and even overkill. You can pair 10000 dollar speakers with a 400 dollar receiver and get a decent sound but if you pair a 10000 dollar receiver with lets say those polks you just got the sound will not make one bit of difference. Your speakers are FAR and away your MOST important purchase. Then your room acoustics. Then placement. Then amplification. I spent 5k on my speakers and have about 1600 in amplification. Thats the balance you want to look for. A system is only as good as its SPEAKERS not AMPLIFICATION.

While I respect your opinion, you need to look at the big picture. The OP originally had a $600 budget and stretched it out to about $1000. Need to keeps things in perspective.
AFAIK, this is his 1st system and you have to start somewhere. You want a receiver that has decent power and needed features.....nothing wrong with his choice. Hell, its only a 5.1 receiver, hardly overkill.

That balance is fine if you've got a $6600 system. He's bought a $900 system, of which $350 went to the receiver (based on prices on BB's Web site, and assuming he "paid for" the RM75 speakers, even if that's not what he got). Given that there's a minimum you need to pay for amplification, his ratio isn't bad. I'd say the BB salesman steered him pretty well.
notoriousmatty 02-09-09, 01:39 PM im not saying anything about the tc choice of purchase. Its a fine startup system. I just didnt want him to get bad advice about amplification and suddenly go out and buy a pioneer elite to pair those with, as there would be 0 benefit. Congrats tc.
