View Full Version : Blu Ray analog connection: RG59 or RG6 - any difference?

I am planning to buy a Blu Ray player with 7.1 analog outputs to connect to my Denon 3801's analog inputs (no HDMI switching). I only need about 3ft of cable for each input as my player will be just above my receiver. I was just wondering if there would be any noticable difference in audio quality (whether realistically or in theory). Is RG59 sufficient for passing the audio signal or will the RG6's wider bandwidth help any. I understand that the RG6 will be more expensive and may be less flexible when installing but if there is any benefit at all with the audio quality then I might be willing to shell out the extra $$ for them. I've been searching the net for someone who might have the answer or any input without any luck... any help would be appreciated before I order some cables - thanks in advance.

Wider bandwidth? We are talking audio signals here (max 20Khz). RG59 is rated into MHz. Use standard RCA interconnects.

Use standard RCA interconnects. And what do you think quality RCA interconnects are, anyway?

RG59 will work great, k3ys3r_soz3200.

A waste of money?

A waste of money?Perhaps. So, what are you suggesting he use? Cables like this:

Coaxial RCA interconnects made with RG58, 59, or 6 are not expensive. At all.

I suspect that the 2-channel analog RCA cables that most people here would use are very similar.

If it works, it works. The RG59's look nicer and are only a little more so its no big deal but there most likely won't be a sonic difference. Some people have better results with twisted pair vs coaxial. I guess it depends on the interference, if any, that's encountered.

3ft? Doesn't matter. A lot of regular RG6 cabling you run into is for cable TV, and is copper-clad steel which is not a good choice. For this short it won't matter though.

Basically I couldn't decide if I should go with this RG6 cable from monoprice:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=2681&seq=1&format=2

or this RG59 cable:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023601&p_id=2743&seq=1&format=2

There would be about an $18 difference between the cables but if it's not worth the extra money, then I think I'll just go the cheaper route. Thanks for the info...

It will make no difference. You couldn't even measure the difference in audio performance between those choices in a lab. They will all work fine.

I just hooked up my new pre-amp, 5 channel amp and blu-ray again with 9 sets of RCA's from monoprice.

good decent cable at sub $2 price points a pair.
