On your receiver, there's an connection called "subwoofer preout".

Use a subwoofer cable and a Y splitter (optional) to connect to the Left and Riger Line-ins on your subwoofer.

Set your speakers to "small", your x-over to 80hz and turn the low-pass on your sub to 160...let your receiver do the cross over

Great thread here...

You plug the "subwoofer preout" into the "Line in L" on the sub. You don't need a "Y" adaptor, there is only one speaker and one amplifier in the subwoofer enclosure, both of those inputs are summed together through two resistors.

You are good to go. Connect your cable between the Pioneer's "SubWoofer PreOut" jack and the "L" jack on the sub. (You can use the "R," it doesn't matter.)

Sub controls:
Volume: Mid point (straight up)
Low Pass (Hz): All the way up to 160 (or more)
Power: Auto or On
Phase: Zero

Now, follow the setup/calibration instructions in the Pioneer manual.

You need to calibrate your system (the 'volume' for each speaker) so they are the same loudness at your listening position. Your user manual should give you more info. You'll want to set the speakers to "small" and/or use an 80Hz crossover. Once the speaker type and crossover has been set, you'll want to set the levels. The correct way to do this is with a Radio Shack SPL meter and a calibration disc. Your receiver likely has internal test tones that could also be used. If you don't want to spring for the SPL meter then try to borrow one or at least set the levels by ear. It won't be accurate but it will be better than no calibration.

What sources are you using? If it's a stereo source, like a regular CD, it'll play from the front l/r speakers unless you tell the receiver to apply some processing.

Don't get frustrated. There is a lot to learn (I'm still learning). If you're playing music, not hearing anything in the surround speakers is normal if it's a 2 channel source & you aren't using the DSP modes. Have you checked the audio output settings on the PS3?

have you verified in the AVR setting under speakers that it shows the rear/surrounds and center are enabled? should say yes or on or something to that effect.

you'll need to set your settings to bitsteam when connected via optical cable for 5.1 sound

snavid, I don't mean this in any condescending manner whatsoever. You should read your receiver's operator's manual completely. You need to understand where all your receiver's adjustments are at and what they do to setup your stuff up properly. I usually read the manuals to my new toys in the bathroom. :D You need to know your receiver backwards and forwards to know how to get the most out of your setup.

I have an old Sony that had an A/B switch.

If you select both then your surrounds will not work as surrounds they will work just like your mains.

Select A.

There should also be a setup somewhere that allows you to enable the subwoofer. It will probably be "Subwoofer Yes/No."

There may also be a "phantom" setting. You want this off. Phantom means that you don't have a center speaker.
