View Full Version : Wonder how many giga-pixels this camera has
audioguy 02-09-09, 04:18 PM This is the MOST AMAZING picture..........
Click on the link at the bottom to open picture. The control for the picture is in the upper left. Press the + sign to zoom in, or the arrows to move right, left, up or down. If the picture looks fuzzy give it a second to clarify.
This is a remarkable panorama of the inauguration. You can actually zero in on faces 1/2 mile away! For fun, focus on Obama (center stage) and then look behind him. There's Dick Cheney in his wheelchair, Clintons , Gore, Bush 41 and even Dan Quayle! Newt, the Supreme court, hats of all descriptions, cell phone cameras, one can spend hours examining! The clarity is amazing!
The technology is truly amazing- and it's un-classified! (Peter is probably getting ready to install a HT with a PJ this good!!)

Steve Bruzonsky 02-09-09, 08:12 PM Russian spy satellite. Audioguy is a spook???
faberryman 02-09-09, 08:18 PM Boy, you can get close-ups of people freezing their butts off.
CINERAMAX 02-09-09, 08:27 PM Too bad the technology doesn't allow you to push Cheney over that balcony.:D
Gino AUS 02-09-09, 09:05 PM Anyone spot Waldo?
It's definitely a composite image because you can see artifacts where it has been stitched together. Could have been made up of multiple images from a DSLR.
edit: Actually, it looks like it was done with a P&S: http://gigapansystems.com/system-page.html
Very cool and fun stuff.
Check here for the GigaPan stitcher.

You want to use this with a really good lens and sensor, but it's surprisingly cheap.
I'm afraid we won't have moving pictures at this resolution for a little while though :)

Tim,
Yes - the image is loaded with artifacts. Zoom in on Obama - and then pan backwards
down the aisle immediately behind him. Pan back about 10 rows until you get to the
stone railing. The man on the aisle just in front of the railing has two faces. His head
is a "double exposure". He is standiing next to a US Navy Admiral.

Andrikos 02-10-09, 10:02 AM It's hard to take panoramas of moving subjects (such as people).
I do that stuff all the time but I limit it to nature shots.
Jason Turk 02-10-09, 10:55 AM The lens is pretty darn impressive though...no cheap optics there.
THE_COW_IS_OK 02-10-09, 11:55 AM Abviously many faces are double exposed. They could have used a camera array with single shutter timing. Instead they went cheap and stiched pics taken by one camera at different time.
Steve Goff 02-10-09, 12:43 PM This is a gigapan image made up of 220 individual photos, taken with a robot camera mount that moves the camera and snaps the pictures. You choose the upper left and lower right edges of the image, and the mount does the rest, deciding how many photos to take and taking them in sequence. Software then stitches the images together.
FrantzM 02-10-09, 09:46 PM I guess people will never be satisfied.. I find it amazing yet many are complaining of double faces or other artifacts in a crowd of 2 MILLION people!! Loaded with artifacts is not the proper qualification for this amazing picture... Great software !
lordcloud 02-11-09, 01:06 PM I think the images this camera takes are far more impressive:

If only there was a display with this resolving capability.

Thank you Frantz, I feel like I just left bizarroland and came back to reality! I think some of these guys could have Angelina Jolee walk naked into their bedroom and tell them "it's party time" and they'd complain that her left little toe had a small hang nail on it :D. This is fricken amazing! Oops, sorry, what was I thinking, lot's of artifacts there! Seriously though, based on some of these guys comments you'd think technology was 10 years further than it actually is. In 10 years this may be common place, but for now I'd say it's pretty darn good, artifacts and all.

Nop, but I would have complained if she had a body with 2 heads :D like in the photo....
audioguy 02-11-09, 04:04 PM Several examples of the half empty glass mentality!!
Dizzman 02-11-09, 04:08 PM did anybody see the movie shallow hal... Jason alexander has this awesome chick and then gets rid of her because her index toe is slightly longer than the big toe.
On a funny note, i was joking about that scene and told my wife and was laughing... ANybody wanna guess what happened next?
Alimentall 02-11-09, 04:20 PM For $380, I think I might just get one of these! How cool. Now, can I strap it to the back of my motorcycle safely while exploring..........

What, that we now have the technology to capture El Gordo y La Flaca in one image?
