View Full Version : Penteo and Watchmen
PenteoSurround 02-10-09, 04:15 PM So yeah, it's Watchmen.
I don't know if they used all six songs that we did for them, but I'm sure they used "Sounds of Silence". It will be interesting to hear.
By the way - we just unveiled our new real-time box for live television at the San Francisco AES meeting. I even showed it playing my iPod in true 5.1.
Take care,
-John

so, uh, how the heck does the real time box work? I thought the whole point was that you needed the human element, no? (tape errors corrected, etc.)

The real time box is for live shows and sports that don't have errors. Many live TV shows are still mixed on stereo boards.
hotguy8289 02-11-09, 06:30 PM Kudos, John. I know you have a better chance of seeing the Virgin Mary in a burrito, but any idea about the time frame for this?

Time frame for what? Watchmen? March 6 at a theater near you. Penteo RT? It's ready for field testing. It's designed as a professional box with stereo in and 5.1 out.
We're trying to get together a few units for test deployment. There are a couple live reality TV shows that are done on stereo boards that it's perfect for, since it effectively turns every pan pot into a joystick by parsing the pan positions.
(It's a lot cheaper than a whole new board!)
PenteoSurround 02-14-09, 03:00 PM The Watchmen music site (www.watchmenmusic.com) lists 12 songs on the soundtrack. Of those, we did "Sounds of Silence", "Me and Bobby McGee" (not sure that one even made it back to LA -- we tested it for them up here), "I'm Your Boogie Man", "Hallelujah", "All Along the Watchtower", and "Ride of the Valkyries".
It's QUITE a production...
ToEhrIsHuman 02-14-09, 03:18 PM Are you considering a 7.1 box too? :)

Can we expect a soundtrack album with Penteo encoded on it (like some of your sample material)? If so, count me in as an eager buyer.

The DVD/BluRay should have the upmixed music as it appears in the film. (No reason not to.)
I don't know about any other releases of 5.1 soundtrack albums. Doubt it.
And as for 7.1, some of this stuff was mostly originally only 3-track anyway!!!

PenteoSurround 02-28-09, 06:31 PM Well it'll be great to get feedback on here as to how the cuts turn out in the theater. It might be a bit shocking to hear some of this stuff parsed out discretely!
ToEhrIsHuman 03-01-09, 12:56 PM Congrats on 'Watchmen'! I'll be seeing it in IMAX next weekend and will let you know how it sounds (hope it won't be too LOUD! don't know why they have to make IMAX so loud anyhow.)
PenteoSurround 03-01-09, 04:31 PM Well like I said, listen for "Sounds of Silence", , "I'm Your Boogie Man", "Hallelujah", "All Along the Watchtower", and "Ride of the Valkyries" -- all taken to 5.1 from stereo mixes.
PenteoSurround 03-04-09, 07:23 PM So for those of you who do see Watchmen in the theaters -- please give your impressions of the period pieces we upmixed... I'll be seeing both the 35mm and the IMAX versions in the next two days...
PenteoSurround 03-06-09, 09:31 PM Just saw it. Proudest of "Hallelujah" (he kept the choir in the rears!) Hendrix Watchtower (note where EVERYTHING is) and Ride of the Valkyries that fills up the whole theater!!!
I just watched the trailer for Watchmen on XBox Live. You can download it in HD and surround. I wonder if the movie will eventually be availble for download on Live? I'll wait for the BluRay though since I won't download anything that has a 24 hour limit. (Apparently decided by someone without kids and has never fallen asleep during a movie.)
The surround sounded great. It was mostly soundtrack and one song I didn't recognise. They also had 4 making of shorts without music.
Congratulations.

Did you notice any mixing differences in the 35mm version when compared to the IMAX version?
PenteoSurround 03-23-09, 11:51 PM As far as I know, the soundtracks are the same.
Ovation 07-24-09, 12:51 AM Just watched this on Blu-ray (sadly, I wasn't able to catch it at the cinema). I'll save my views on the movie for a movie thread (except to say I quite enjoyed it and will add it to the collection) but I just want to say I very much enjoyed the MCH versions of those songs and reiterate my wish to have such a function on a receiver/pre-pro (or even outboard device) someday.
Good stuff.

That's great! Thanks.
(Responding from the same computer that did the processing and which still contains the audio files... :-))
