What receiver are we talking about?
If it does audio over HDMI, you're in business. You set the PS3 to do LPCM and it does the decoding and sends it to the receiver over HDMI.
If the receiver doesn't do audio over HDMI (such as the Onkyo TX-SR506), you're out of luck.

Eh? Why would you need more than 1?

the receiver i am using is VSK918V-K pioneer - 3 hdmi ports on it 2 in and 1 out???
one thing i wanted to add i was reading and people said you cant do linear pcm through optical how come when i switch to linear pcm i hear things better and says dolby digital tru hd on the ps3 display while movie is playing but when i switch to bitstream sounds are lower and tru hd goes away....again this is through optical ????
XanderMoser 02-10-09, 07:18 PM 2 in and 1 out allows it to accept hdmi inputs from two devices and output one of them. it acts like a switch. you can select which one you want with the remote.
hdmi is just video and audio signals combined in one plug, to put it simply
plug an hdmi cable between the ps3 hdmi out and one of the hdmi ins on the receiver. then plug another hdmi cable between the hdmi out on the receiver and the hdmi in on the tv.

Optical can't do TrueHD. It just does not have the bandwidth. The TrueHD must be going over HDMI to the receiver if that is the case, and bypassing the optical.
snavid972 02-10-09, 07:37 PM ok well i got video and sound now yeppe now question i do set the setting to linear correct? well i did that and i only hear the voices up front and on the rears just sound and sound effects no voices is that correct ? also how can i tell that it is tru hd on my receiver

Pretty much, although you may hear the occasional voice from the rears if it is mixed that way. Mostly, voices from people onscreen and onscreen sound effects should be the center channel, panning sound effects and music soundtracks should be left and right, and ambiance and "surround" effects from the surrounds.

If you're using the PS3, you can't. The TrueHD indicator does not trip on Linear PCM, only on Bitstream, and guess what? The PS3 doesn't bitstream.
TrueHD is only a method of losslessly packaging the sound. Once it is decoded, it becomes PCM. There's no need for TrueHD at that point. It needs to become PCM at some point to be converted to sound for the speakers. Doesn't matter if the player or the receiver does it (with the PS3, you only have one option anyway.)
snavid972 02-10-09, 07:49 PM thanks again tulpa for answering my questions......one other thing the settings on my receiver for instance theres a button on the remote for adv surround which has settings such as drama, movie, game,x stereo etc... when i switch those i then hear voices in the rears what do you recomment voices on the rears or fronts only......also there is a+ b and a then b what does this mean my receiver has dopor logic II is that good or should i change it

Those sound like listening modes. Other receivers have similar ones under different names. Cycle through them and use them where you like.

Well, I would personally be driven nuts if onscreen voices came behind me. You're supposed to match the sounds with the images on the screen.
If you like them coming from behind you, don't let me stop you, but that's not what was intended. Remember, surround sound isn't all sounds coming at you at all angles. But set it how you like.
also there is a+ b and a then b what does this mean
Sounds like it has two zones. There should be some extra speaker clips or something, but if you don't have extra speakers hooked up, just leave it on the primary zone (usually A.)

Dolby ProLogicII? That's for converting stereo into a matrixed 5.1 surround sound. You don't need it if you're watching something already using 5.1 like Dolby Digital (on DVDs) or TrueHD (on Blu-Ray.)

well when i turn dolby logic proII off i get no surrond sound?????
Huh. That's weird. Something might not be set right.
What are we defining as surround sound? And please don't tell me "all speakers going at once."
