According to the email all of the units that are up for grabs are completely refurbished and carry the same warranty and service options available on A-stock units.

Does the price for video equipment like this usually drop in half when used/refurbished?

would these be a better alternative than the Sim2 products for large 15-20 foot screens?

Are these the same units that Sony has reportedly been "giving away" just to have them used in high profile venues, etc?

Yes, this is a sign that 8K is coming at half the price.

Onward and upward! :)

Ah, the good ole days when people told me that 4K would never be available for anything like what a consumer could afford ;)

Well Canon did start its own LCoS production last year. Guess that would lead the French to a heated AVS thread, claiming they haven't had to go back to putting a new sticker on JVC beamers;-).

DO factor in the $8K camera based set-up system, according to jeremy it will be very hard to get rid of the shading without it.

i haven't followed the whole 4k thing merely because it was totally out of my price range (and still is), but if one were to get a 4K pj, would it simply upconvert 1080p bluray movies, etc to 4k resolution? and i guess there is no current material available in 4k?

Wow, and people say that 720 3-DLPs are depreciating like mothers.
Man, these Sonys are a bargain! Are they any good?

Well, the cool thing is that 4x resolution enhancement is relatively easy and effective because you can sharpen the picture, smooth edges, etc. Going beyond 4x resolution enhancement is a whole lot harder. So a 4K projector is perfect for running 1080p HD.

I just bought 2 of the 10000 lumen ones to stack on my 92" diagonal screen. Now I have to find an electrician who can hook up a large panel box... :D

Well I was planning to keep my a single 25 watt desklamp on for reading light and I was worried I'd have to compensate. :D

My guess is that it shows that the intended market never materialized and not much more than that. They couldn't compete in any other PQ parameter with 2k DLP except resolution and that wasn't enough.

Indeed the new Sim2 Lumis shows that there are apparently other areas of projector design that can provide more substantial improvements than just ramping up the pixels.

In my honest opinion, id be inclied to say that Sony products, over the last 10 years at least, have completley lost their "edge" 15/20 years ago Sony were the dogs nuts, now a days they are competeing with companys such as Panasonic, and Hitachi, both relativly infant companys compared to Sony, ok well maby not Panasonic - that was a bad example.
I've ALWAYS supported and genuinly prefered supporting the underdogs, rather than buying top brand names, i believe it's always the smaller guys who have the bigger ideas.

Sonys 50% sales just makes me think meh, i dont really care, and neither do Sony.

Their warehouse space is probably worth more to them than the goods.
