I love listening to music with my MacBook, but the built-in speakers are pretty low quality. I have seen a lot of nice computer speakers, but I want ones that can give me a real good sound quality, and are fairly inexpensive (under $100). Also, I would like them to be compatible with AirTunes, so I can wirelessly use them with my MacBook. Are there any such speakers?

Logitech, just plug and play. That is what I have hooked to my MacPro, you could do the same with the express. And they actually sound fantastic for what they are. These are the ones I own... http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/253&cl=us,en

And they have them in black too. I liked the silver as they match my dual cinema displays.

You can buy an Airport Express an connect them to any set of speakers.

In that case, what are a real good pair of speakers under $100? Something that can fill a dorm room sufficiently, and maybe have surround sound.

If you are on a budget, I would suggest a good pair of computer speakers (with or without an included sub) as opposed to a full set of 5 speakers+sub. There are oodles of computer speakers available at that $100 price point. Do you want to buy them locally or on the internet?

An Airport Express is going to cost you $100 or so, btw. Are you sure you need wireless capability in a dorm room?

I guess I don't need airport for the dorm room, but I would like to have it eventually for when I go back home. For speakers, I saw this on ebay:

Anyone here good things about these?

What kind of sound quality can one suspect from using air tunes? I assume it is digital to the airtunes box?

What kind of sound quality can one suspect from using air tunes? I assume it is digital to the airtunes box?It will pass CD quality music, wirelessly, no problem. If you are connecting it to a receiver, you can use a digital connection or an analog connection from the wall unit. Its 3.5mm output is a combo analog headphone out/mini-toslink out. If you use a digital connection, your receiver's DACs will be utilized. If not, the unit's DACs will be utilized.

Anyone here good things about these? The Airport is only capable of 2-channel analog stereo output. So, you will only be able to use the "matrix mode" to simulate surround sound with those particular speakers. Some 5.1 speaker setups like that will feature DPLII, which will provide better surround sound but it is still not DD5.1. There are some more expensive setups that feature a digital optical input and true DD5.1 decoding capability.

Why do you want surround sound? Are you going to use this for music, movies, or both?

And why would you spend $100 for an Airport but only $50 on your speakers?
