Will "high end" video projectors ever go to levels like they have done in Audio?

or will this take another decade or two?

What I like about the video side is that subjective opinions do not play a huge roll and snake oil does not or can not play any part. On the video side we rely on specs and what a device can and can't do.

Well, there's the 1949 RCA three tube projector, requiring new tubes in its Schmidt Optik configuration every few hours.

The 1930s mechanic lightvalve projector from the UK, can't think of the company's name right now).
The CRT based oil/schlierenstop projectors, Eidophor and knock-offs, Talaria, and these Ruski's.

Or the modern variant, the GLV LASER projectors.
Or non-GLV LASER projectors.
Plenty of CRT beamers, DLPs, and so on.

Agreed. I think the "snake oil" aspect of high-end audio scares people away pursuing high-performance music and home theater systems.
I think that anyone can appreciate good audio if they are given the opportunity to experience it without feeling that they have to have a "trained ear" to tell the difference.

I can't believe that that was anything but an Andy Kaufmann style gag? Of course I don't know for sure, but in any case it is great viral marketing for all concerned.
Funny performance though! Pheonix is a great actor. That interview was worthy of Spinal Tap!
