View Full Version : I just bought my first 2 HD-DVDs
kunuggs 02-12-09, 09:16 PM It makes no sense. I have had a Blu-ray player since 1/08. I bought about 50 BDs in the first 2 months b/c the BOGOs were still going on. However, since that place was selling HD DVD for $5 each (with free shipping on orders over $25), I grabbed The Big Lebowski and Fear And Loathing. I don't even have an HD DVD player yet, haha. I plan on buying a used A3 or A3 and using it mainly for upconverting.
It just makes sense to use an A2 or A3 for upconverting since my projector is only 720 and since those players are cheaper than upconverting players.
Welcome to HD DVD! I hope you enjoy it as much as some of us have. Oh, and I've been picking up the cheap movies by they handful. It's a good time to be in. :)
cobolisdead 02-12-09, 10:22 PM Welcome to the format. We don't have anything new, but we got a lot of old stuff that is cheap.

I would go for an A20 and future-proof your system for whenever you go to 1080p/24. I started with an A2 and quickly took it back for the 20. While the A2 was fine, the A20 was just better.

To our eyes (the wife, kid and I) we think the A20 has a better PQ than our BDP-BX1. When it comes to clear and crisp the HD-DVD just seems to look better. But the BX1 is no slouch either, we have no complaints about it at all.

protovision 02-13-09, 11:09 AM if you have gamers in the family, you could also go the Xbox360 route, and pick up the HD DVD add-on (if still avilable) for cheap. The add-on comes with remote + King Kong.

FWIW, for the next week Frys has the xbox add-on bundled with King Kong, Battle Star Galactica S1, and Heroes S1 HDDVDs for $50 (http://shop1.frys.com/product/5804653?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG), a bundle with the remote, King Kong, Bourne Identity, and Bourne Supremacy HDDVDs (http://shop1.frys.com/product/5829023) for $40, and a bundle with King Kong and all five Harry Potter HDDVDs for $60 (http://shop1.frys.com/product/5842603) that is good today only (Feb. 13).

This also tends to be my experience comparing my PS3 and my XA2. In general, HD DVD has a bit more sharpness and overall impact than BD. That's why I've stayed in the HD DVD scene and continued to buy discs. (However, my impression is that BD is slowly approaching that same quality level.)
guitarplayer 02-13-09, 12:28 PM I am a dyed in the wool HD-dvd fan, but I have to honestly say that when the transfer is equal I can tell no difference between the two when I am watching them. I think the difference you all are seeing is in the transfers, which is sometimes a very big difference. I love blu now as well, having picked up a PS3 last summer, but I have a ton more HD-dvd's because I just can't seem to walk away from the 3 and 4 dollar price, which is equivalent to renting for me because the closest place that rents blu is a 30 minute drive for me. I do really like the fact that blu discs are harder to scratch, but on the other hand I have had no trouble with discs getting scratched with HD-dvd. And fortunately, I haven't really had much issue with discs (even combo discs) that didn't want to play right with either format, both have worked beautifully for me.
So, having said all that, if you can find them on sale, I'd keep buying them, at the prices they currently bring, how can you go wrong?
AmishFury 02-13-09, 12:41 PM ahh the $5 HD DVDs from amazon... i've hit up that seller twice and might buy a few more before they disappear

I almost want to go buy a BD version of Transformers (we have the HD version) and compare the 2 and see which one has the better WOW factor. Since we just got the BX1 and it has all the latest bells and whistles (profile 2.0, 1080p/24, BDLive, etc.) it is really hard to compare the 2 different movie formats without an exact comparison. My guess is that they would both be identical, but we still prefer HD-DVD.
davcole 02-13-09, 04:03 PM I kinda miss HD DVD.
I'm shocked that not all BD's allow you to bookmark. Of the HD DVD's i've had there was only one concert video that would not allow you to use bookmarking. I think that HD DVD's streamline HD-I was easier to utilize and when the proper encoding was done, equal to what I see on BD.
I may in fact add some HD DVD titles to my collection if it's specific titles and the price is right. In fact since i'd know the feature films would look and sound the same, i'm actually looking to get MATRIX boxset on HD DVD as oppposed to BD. Plus, I don't think REVOLUTIONS has the glitch that's on the BD.

If you are an audio purist you might argue or notice that there is slightly more punch in the BD version of the movie since that is lossless TrueHD while the HD-DVD is DD+. Not sure there is much to choose from PQ wise though

I'm not so much a purist. As long as my surround produces decent booms, bangs and groans, I'm pretty happy. :D

I'm definitely a purist but I ain't 3,4 or 5 times the cost kinda purist.
Just got a knock on the door no more than 5 minutes ago and my shipment has arrived. For 30 bucks, the price of your standard bluray movie , I got...

Thanks man. I'm on top of it. Hopefully a Kmart or Target has it here in the US.
Conversely, I just bought my first two BDs (opposed to eight HD DVDs); local Blockbuster finally started dumping their previously-viewed discs. Guess I'm officially purple now.
